It's amazing how much Steve Jobs meant to young people, not just the Baby Boomers. Mami's comment reflects that.

A true American Icon!

thank you for giving us laptops better than the pc

Better still if they would have observed holiday today.

Thanks for giving us something far better than Microsoft. My friend e-mailed me 'Sad day for Apple people" and I thought he was just joking about the disappointment over the iPhone 5. Then I found out from Amazon checking on my shipment about his passing. Wow...Sad day indeed! RIP Steve Jobs!

I wonder if the world would feel such sorrow if the ex-CEO of that other operating system passed away.

RIP Mr. Jobs.

"Once you have had a Mac you will never go back!"

Thanks for the comeback in 1985 and thanks for all the state of the art gagets , not fair checking out at 56.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

A sad day indeed, but the fact that it's dominating the news more than pretty much everything else in the recent past is tribute to how much the man meant to people, the company, and the world. And 56 is FAR too young to go, let alone the guy already had transplant surgery a couple of years back. So many bright lights go out too quickly. He'll most certainly go down in the history books.

RIP Mr.Jobs. His death will rock the world - from the Silicon Valley to the smallest village in Papua New Guinea. Greatest person of our times. Heck, if he wasn't of the Buddhist faith - I'd reckon they'd give him a Sainthood.

A great innovator. I am a devotee with every iproduct, but some comments slamming Bill Gates are unfair based on his post-Microsoft philanthropy

4 ( +5 / -1 )

while I do acknowledge his innovative skills and leadership he did seem a bit harsh on many of his own people. Unfortunately in just a few years time Apple will become another memory. So many great IT companies have vanished in just the last few years.

Only the good die young!! RIP Steve!!! From My Apple iPhone now on the Chuo line watching everyone looking at the sad news of your death.

Monsieur Jobs, I will see you in the iCloud.

Mr. Jobs and his contribution to the world has been great, but in all fairness, Bill Gates has done more for humankind than Steve Jobs ever achieved. The world is more than just computers and phones and portable music players -

Mr. Jobs made life for millions of people in affluent countries more convenient.

Mr. Gates is saving millions of lives in countries where people don't have the means to save themselves.

So dissing Bill Gates as a way of showing appreciation to Steve Jobs is in my humble opinion rather inappropriate. They are both great, albeit for different reasons.

Have to agree with Phil.

I don't hear Apple giving away 100$ computers in 3rd world countries, etc.

Both Gates and Jobs are icon of the Computer-world and should have equal respects, regardless if we prefer computer X or Y.

R.I.P. Steve. I think this guy was an innovator to say the very least. I will never use Microsoft again. Apple is the best computer and if it was not for him that would not be the case. The old macs were terrible but the macs now are so good to use. He was a great innovator. I hope Apple does not fall on bad times because of his absence, but I think it might be difficult to keep up its current status after his unfortunate passing.

Please R.I.P. Steve Jobs. YOU WERE A GREAT INNOVATOR.

And 56 is FAR too young to go

Agreed, though he did more than most in that amount of time.

Exactly my thoughts.

Steve you will live on both in history and further developments built on your shoulders What a legacy to leave behind. RIP

Steve didn't believe in god, so what kind of 'prayer' did they offer?

1 ( +5 / -4 )

yeah funny that, a dead atheist getting prayers: doesn't honor his memory much.

thanks for the toys SJ. Now folks need to get over it.

Steve didn't believe in god, so what kind of 'prayer' did they offer?

Smart alec comment. Steve Jobs was a Buddhist. Hey, maybe they offered a Buddhist prayer.....

@yongYang, Something that would fit him would be delivered.

Steve Jobs was not only a visionary , dreamer and innovator, but he had a strong ability to articulate his message.

After reading his commencement speech at Stanford University, I am convinced that his head was always very organized.

1) Strong Opening

2)Simple classic structure

3)The Rule of Three used.

4)Talked about the theme of birth/death/rebirth

I am starting today with a heavy heart after a loss of American icon.

Steve Jobs lived a full life who found someting he always love to do..

He was the luckiest guy until the last day of his life..

yeah funny that, a dead atheist getting prayers:

Are you an atheist if you believe in yourself? As did Steve Jobs. The bottom line of all religions was to believe in yourself.

I wonder if the world would feel such sorrow if the ex-CEO of that other operating system passed away.

First, the Apple O/S isn't why the company exists today. It's hardware is why it exists today.

Second, while I don't claim to be an expert on either man's life, I HAVE heard of the "Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation" and I see on Wiki that it gives over $1.5 BILLION a year worldwide to communities where an iPod would be a paperweight once the battery died and an iPhone would only be useful as a GPS device (again, until the battery died). On the other hand, I can't seem to find a "Steve Jobs Foundation". Perhaps Steve has named it something else and perhaps the Gates' Foundation has a better PR group getting its press out, but perhaps Steve just didn't start anything remotely similar to what Bill Gates created. Something tells me that the world would be quite a bit more affected if "the ex-CEO of that other operating system passed away."

It is a sad day when anyone famous that was loved by so many passes away but what about all the thousands of anonymous souls that passed away yesterday that we don't mourn because they did not invent something that all of us want to have, are they any less remarkable? Most of us don't realize that large companies like Apple have thousands of brainstormers and the iPad or iPhone may have not been the brainchild of Jobs but from a team of far thinking marketing geniuses but who gets the credit, the CEO of course.

I agree with Hawkeye. While it's sad that he passed away, I'm a little bit disturbed (not quite the right word) at how big a deal people are making it. Had the iPod or iPhone or any other Apple gadget not become as popular as it did, I don't think Jobs' death would be half the story that it is this day. This is not to take anything away from the man or his achievements, but more of a comment on our somewhat shallow values as a society.

My dad died two weeks ago yesterday....and no shit, I found out on my brand new iPad 2. Well, technically the FB message said, "I just heard, I'm so sorry." I found out for sure after I called my friend, who is a first responder & heard the call go over the radio while he was working another call.

Never purchased any Apple product, but still, it's very sad day... Rest In Peace, The Great Innovator and digital dreamer...

Apple should be fine for a few years. Projects that Steve Jobs had a hand on (and he was a very hands-on CEO) should come out OK. It's the years afterwards with all-new projects that would be the issue. Apple's strength (Steve Jobs) is also its weakness. Many people follow Apple because of him; he could create demand where there was not even a market before. Could the new Apple CEO do that? Only if people follow him as much as they followed Steve Jobs.

He was still young, it is sad he passed away . My thoughts and prayers for him and his family.

Going to visit the Tokyo GInza Apple store today, just to feel the commiseration. Jobs left the world a better place for his vision. Written on my iMac, with the iPhone charged up and ready for the day, a day made significantly better thanks to this great man and his 89,000 Apple employees. End of a Team, as well an era. Whatever comes next, builds upon his life's accomplishments.

Cancer took our Jobs! iSad

but all you can do is, live life to the Macs

@Hatsoff. No. Not smart alec. Just informed pal. Buddhists wouldn't offer a prayer. Perhaps a devotional meditation.

Ok I'm going to quote this comment because this is exactly what I think:
