Tokyo couple die in apparent suicide

TOKYO —

A man and a woman in their 30s were found dead in their apartment in Tokyo’s Minato Ward on Sunday night, in what police believe was an apparent double suicide.

The apartment’s real estate agent contacted police after not receiving rent arrears and being unable to contact the couple for a week. Police entered the apartment and found the pair lying on the bed where they had apparently died several days earlier.

According to police, there were no signs of a struggle, and no obvious, visible injuries on their bodies. The door was locked from the inside, leading police to suspect a case of double suicide. It is believed that the apartment was rented in the name of the deceased woman. Police have not released the names of the couple.

Very sad and unnecessary, yet romantic at the same time.

    Romantic? Nope...just sick.

goddog. Yes it is sick and very sad. But to go with your loved one laying besides you is kind of romantic. (Not that I am saying what they did was correct).

there is nothing romantic about a double suicide. theres something romantic about walking hand in hand at harborland in sannnomiya, but not about taking your lives together. cant see the romance in that. maybe I'm sick, but sorry, cant see the romance.

Guess You all don't know the Japanese history of Shinjuu romantic suicide performed by couples. Most famously written about by Chikamatsu in the 1700's in his play Sonezaki Shinjuu. It was usually performed by those forbidden to love one another by society, class etc....

There is also the possibility that it was a murder-suicide.

I think it's selfish and inconsiderate.

Sad, maybe a bit romantic, but in a country with 30K+ suicides a year, why is this news?

The pair were lying on the bed, not 'laying' there, tokoyokawasaki. ;8)

How hard must it be to starve yourself to death. They must have kept a pact together.

Going by Japanese news sites, the man was laid on top of the bed, the woman was in the bed.

I seriously doubt they starved themselves to death. Surely drugs/poison.

This is not romantic at all. This was a young couple in their 30's with lots of living yet to do. If they just killed themselves over money problems, it is a sad waste of two lives. And they had each other which is more than many other people have!

Romantic isn't the word I'd choose. Ghastly. Appalling. Tragic. a Waste.

I don't know about romantic, but these Japanese suicide rates are going to be high this year. I can already tell. Soon, stuff like this won't be tragic enough to be in the news. "Oh. Another suicide? Ah well. Did you see the basketball game last night?" will be how most conversations go.
