Tokyo police open 2 bureaus for missing persons throughout September
TOKYO —
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police on Tuesday opened two bureaus for missing persons, providing a location where those looking for missing family members can go and examine photos and likenesses of unidentified bodies, and compare dental impressions, fingerprints and DNA if they believe they recognize a victim.
The two centers, one at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police headquarters in Chiyoda and one at the Asakusa Kannon-mae police box, are open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. until the end of September.
Within the past 15 years, around 2,600 of the bodies discovered in Tokyo Prefecture have never been identified. Police hope these two bureaus will help work toward lowering that number, along with giving those who are looking for a missing person a place to receive consultation. Police open these missing persons bureaus every year, and last year received around 800 inquiries and succeeded in identifying 38 people.

So to put this in another way, the police want members of the public to do their job for them? What a great idea, the overworked guardians of the law have the chance to clear up all these John Doe cases without even leaving the comfort of their Koban.

So the police can't find "living" missing people they have to be "dead"? Seems police do well when people just hand themselves in, it a good job. I always wanted to join Police Force in UK (nearly did had interview) as they kick arse and don't carry guns, only on special missions. Japan police could learn something from them.

They are not identified most likely because they committed suicide. Family member are responsible for the clean up cost after they off themselves, say in front of a train. Therefore many suicides go unclaimed.
