Will we be able to jump off it? (NZ's Sky Tower rules!!)

There is something Freudian in this ridiculous competition to have tallest tower...

    that's not a toothpick. that's kebab skewer.

Given satellite communications and other digital technology it's a totally unnecessary boondoggle that might not survive a major quake. It's 1950's technology that is a perfect match for Japan's 1950's way of thinking.

634-610 = around 20 yep that will do, whats 3 meters in engineering anyway.

Or are the pro portions of the rest of the structure being slightly changed to keep it original design shape/concept.

I hope someone builds something bigger somewhere - this reminds me of the Tower of Babel. Ridiculous!

They're not trying hard enough. They need to build it tall enough for it to land in the Edogawa or Bunkyou wards when The Big One hits.

  • inakaRob at 09:33 AM JST - 20th October

I wonder if they will still make keitai straps with Kitty chan and Domo kun climbing the Tokyo tower.

I think WilliB that they are jealous of what the Samsung corp has been doing around the world....so they can't let them Koreans beat em at anything. The new Dubai tower is the tallest building in the world(built by Samsung).

  • smithinjapan at 05:32 PM JST - 23rd October

Before it's even done they'll build something bigger somewhere else, and the Japanese will once again have to cater to their insecurities by planning another equally useless building in Tokyo.

Grow up, people. If it doesn't serve a function -- and in this day and age a taller broadcasting tower means nothing -- build something that does.

  • nigelboy at 12:26 AM JST - 24th October

why a tower? because we need to broadcast radiowaves, TV signals, telephone signals mate. The higher the tower, the better is transmission, the better is the coverage, the lesser the interference.

Don't bother mikihouse. Most posters here are believe that anything built by Japanese are "unnecessary" and that there is "no need" while they turn blind on the real "unncessary" building such as Burj Dubai.
