Tooth found in stew at Tokyo hotel restaurant

A tooth was found inside a dish served to a customer at the restaurant inside the Prince Hotel located in Tokyo's Shinjuku district. The hotel released a statement Friday saying that an investigation is being conducted into the incident

The dish in question, a beef and tomato stew, was part of the lunch buffet on July 22, Fuji TV reported. A male customer was eating the stew when he noticed a foreign element in his mouth as he was chewing.

Officials from the Hotel say that the stew was cooked inside the hotel sometime between July 21 and 22. Hotel management are questioning the staff, and conducting dental examinations to identify the origin of the tooth which had a silver cap.

Neither the customer who found the tooth, nor 30 other guests who ate the same food reported any health concerns.

Following the incident, the hotel submitted a formal apology to all parties involved.

A really filling stew!

had a silver filling.

This was on "Sukkiri" yesterday morning. It looked more like a silver-capped tooth rather than a tooth with a filling.

@carp_boya -Thanks for the extra info. Now that seems more plausible.

Yes, that's correct. The story has been amended.

hmmm. I'd like to know more about the man who found the tooth. Was he a wealthy regular guest at luxury hotel restaurants or was this his first visit? I'm not doubting his story but there are also alot scammers in Japan who go around trying to extort money out of businesses.

The tooth is out there.

One problem with buffets is that they are bacteria havens. Kitchen staff usually take precautions by wearing facemasks, haor coverings, washing frequently, but food on a buffet comes into close contact with 20 to 100 customers of varying hygiene habits and health conditions.

Apparently he couldn't handle the tooth.

Dan Lewis, I may be easy, but that was funny.

Sad that these things are occurring in what is probably the most meticulously clean and systematically sanitary country where reliability is the trademark.

Interesting that these occurrences are considered so rare and so terribly unacceptable for the standards "expected" by the general population.

Good that Japan has high standards so much respected by the rest of the world. Other countries compare using these standards and judge the reliability and quality of products from other nations.

But why are these events occurring?

Almost all these problems were the results human error or some human "intervention". What does that mean?

Is the quality of workers a problem? Is the system used failing? What changes occurred, such as automation and robotics, that caused these things occur? Or were they a management problem?

I hope the media as well as the researchers shed some meaningful light on this problem.

That soup really had some bite!

Customer: "Waiter, there is a tooth in my soup!"

Waiter: "I am terribly sorry about that sir, but we ran out of flies!".

The "tooth fairy" got the wrong address...

am i the only one hoping that the main ingredient in that stew wasn't the owner of the tooth? **

A male customer was eating the stew when he noticed a foreign element in his mouth as he was chewing.

Ugh! It's a blessed relief that the customer didn't swallow the tooth accidentally.

Nutter alert!

I imagined that it would a tooth of an animal, but somehow a human tooth is more disgusting.

Freeze dry the tooth, grind it up...voila, you now have DNA to point to the toothful owner!(sort of a CSI joke for those of you who like CSI)

hayai.jotaro, the same thing crossed my mind.

Old wive's tale says, "One gains Wisdom When Finding A Tooth In Their Stew!"

A by product of an ageing society. It's more likely to be from an old customer than stuff.

Shouldn't they have waited until the investigation was concluded?

It's not as if some doing a shift would be able to hide it.

Talking about teeth - on a similar note I found a live caterpillar in my Caesar salad once. That was at a family restaurant in Funabashi. So it would seem Japan has a few issues when it comes to food preparation
