Toyota to conduct autumn traffic-safety campaign
TOYOTA CITY —
Toyota Motor Corp said Wednesday it will conduct its yearly autumn traffic-safety campaign in Japan from Sept 21 to Oct 31 to coincide with the Japanese government’s autumn nationwide campaign, which runs from Sept 21 to Sept 30. A total of 419 companies, made up of vehicle dealers, logistics systems companies, forklift dealers, parts distributors and rental/lease dealers, will participate in the campaign.
The main theme of this year’s campaign is “traffic safety for senior citizens.” Toyota will distribute 820,000 traffic safety flyers at vehicle dealers and other locations nationwide, and through the flyers emphasize the way color affects nighttime visibility, call on drivers to be even more careful at night and encourage pedestrians to wear reflective material.
Senior citizens 65 years old or above accounted for more than half (50.4%) of traffic fatalities in 2010. Considering that people in the same age group accounted for 71.6% of fatalities among pedestrians and that the number of fatalities among senior-citizen pedestrians is about 1.9 times higher during the night than the day, Toyota believes that wearing reflective materials can be extremely effective for preventing traffic accidents involving senior citizens.

Good for Toyota! You wouldn't expect the police or the J-Gov to sponsor such an initiative.

I think you're right, Disillusioned. If we think about Japan's official insensitivity towards child safety, nuclear safety, etc. we might suspect that the authorities look at traffic accidents involving the elderly as a way to reduce government pension and health insurance expenditures. Good for Toyota. If one looks for other legal products in Japan that cause as many fatalities as automobiles do, there are none to be found. One would wonder why manufacturers and officials aren't doing more for safety.

Yep, imagine a 60km/h full on frontal collision between a Nissan march and a forklift.

This makes me think the problem could more easily have been solve by instating a Curfew for old people

See that thing there.. That is a pedestrian crossing. When you see one, stop or at least don't ignore it.
