Traces of fugu found in packet of seasoning in Oita supermarket

A packet of seasoning sold at an Oita city supermarket on Tuesday was found to have traces of poisonous fugu fish in it.

According to city health officials, the packet was purchased as part of a two-pack of aji flavor seasoning, NTV reported Thursday. The supermarket received word of the incident after the customer who had purchased the seasoning packet phoned them to say that the flavoring tasted like fugu.

Officials said that 11 other similar packets were sold at the supermarket, but no other complaints have been received.

I'm really baffled as to how this can even happen. Since preparation of fugu needs to be done very carefully you'd figure that they would not just have it lying around to contaminate other food.

Poisonous fugu fish meat is tasty and supposed to be safe if prepared by a certified fugu chef, could be the reason why added to the flavor seasoning. Question is are there certified fugu meat processing plants. Consumers need to know because label rules allow the manufacturers to label the ingredient simply as ''fish meat''.
