SAPPORO —
Work began on Wednesday building the sculptures for Sapporo’s 60th Snow Festival to be held Feb 5 -11 in Odori Park. Commercial operators and members from the Ground Self Defense Force will transport more than 30,000 tons of snow from surrounding areas to the park.
A spokesman from the GSDF said with the heavy snowfall over the New Year, there should be sufficient snow for the festival.
There will be around 280 sculptures on display, including ones of Hamamatsu Castle; Tokyo Disneyland, which held its 25th anniversary last year, and Namdaimon - which burnt down in Seoul last year.
