Damien15> Correct, Europe eats far less fish. But they have no qualms about over fishing their waters for sales to Asia.

Is it a good time to buy shares of companies that are related to the tuna farming industry?

  • Klein2 at 01:36 PM JST - 20th October

The article doesn't say... what diet are they using?

  • smithinjapan at 01:40 PM JST - 20th October

Not that this will appear in the J-media, but pretty soon the Japanese are going to have to stop insisting that it's everyone else's problem and realize that 80% of the overfishing of these tuna is either by Japan or FOR Japan. They also need to lose the defense that, "Japan has been eating fish for a long time", etc.

The sooner we can work on limits, and enforce them, the better.

The tuna weigh less because they are younger fish. Not enough time to put on some kilos before they are netted.

    " . . . overfishing is strongly suspected."

    Gee. You think?

  • stirfry at 02:28 PM JST - 20th October

"experts suspect overfishing"...you mean what the rest of the world has been saying for 10 years ?

  • Disillusioned at 04:21 PM JST - 20th October

Wait for it! ...... Here it comes...........

This is because the whales eat the tuna's food.

  • Foxie at 05:46 PM JST - 20th October

The reason is that they are only allowed to kill 60 whales. So all the other whales need more food and eating up all the tunas.

I do agree with Smith san on this issue, Japan is its own worse enemy when it comes to whaling and fishing. We are just going to have to accept a lower amount of Tuna now before it decreases to none. Perhaps there should be a tuna holiday now and people will just have tuna tofu until the day fishing can start again.

As if you could read and find out.

and realize that 80% of the overfishing of these tuna is either by Japan or FOR Japan.

How do you arrive at those figures?

  • ca1ic0cat at 05:49 AM JST - 21st October

I'm not surprised. Fishing is the one area of food production where man can not increase yields easily; especially for the larger fish. Those populations will collapse. Malthus was right on this topic. Too bad he got such a bad name for farming and mining predictions.

  • motytrah at 09:01 AM JST - 21st October

@nigelboy> In the first three months of 2009 Japan consumed 69,096 Metric Tons of Fresh Tuna (a good chuck of it imported). All of 2008 the US consumed 12,300 Metric Tons of Fresh Tuna. The vast majority of world eats canned tuna. Usually small Skipjack Tuna which aren't on the verge of collapse.

So yeah, it's Japan is the primary issue.

This is the most down to earth comment from you ever. Hoping to hear more.
