Two brothers died after a fire destroyed their family home in Tokyo's Ome City on Tuesday morning. Police said the dead boys were aged 7 and 1 and were part of a family of seven who lived in the house.
Emergency services received a call reporting a fire at about 3 a.m. at the 2-story house owned by Yasuo Hiraoka, NTV reported. All seven members of the family were asleep on the 2nd floor and suffered burns and smoke inhalation, firefighters said. The seven were taken to hospital, where two of the children were pronounced dead.
The house was completely destroyed by the fire, police said, adding they believe a short circuit may have caused the blaze.

You can buy battery-operated smoke detectors for a few hundred yen at any decent electrical shop. Might be a good investment....

Really, I just bought 6 of them and had to pay 1500 yen a piece! Darn. People, do get smoke detectors, install them, and check batteries twice a year. No excuses!

All Japanese homes are now required by law to have a smoke detector in every room by this Thursday (1 April).

This is not just sad, but STUPID!! These adults are to blame! We here in Tokyo, by LAW must have SMOKE DETECTORS in our houses! I know I bought them at Joshin Denki from Osaka, good prices and a couple thousand yen is not worth your life??? The life of your wife and kids??? RIP poor little kids out in Ome, Tokyo.
