A typhoon was moving toward Minamidaito island, about 400 kilometers east of Okinawa, on Tuesday morning, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. At 12 noon, Typhoon No. 3 was located 80 kilometers southwest of the island with wind speeds of between 39 and 73 mph (33 and 64 knots).
The agency said the typhoon is expected to bring heavy showers and thunderstorms to Okinawa and parts of Kyushu, with up to 200 mm of rain forecast through Wednesday.
The agency said that by Wednesday midday, the typhoon will likely be downgraded to a Category 1 storm.
