Typhoon brings heavy rain to Tokyo area

TOKYO —

Typhoon No. 11 approached Tokyo and surrounding areas Monday morning, with the Japan Meteorological Agency issuing warnings about heavy rain, strong wind and high waves. As of 11:00 a.m., the typhoon was located some 40 kilometers north-northeast of Hachijo Island, about 200 km south of Tokyo, and moving north at a speed of some 20 km per hour with a maximum wind velocity of 162 kph, the agency said.

Winds are expected to strengthen gradually from Monday afternoon in eastern Japan and the Pacific coast of northeastern Japan. With rainfall expected to pick up in those areas, the agency also warned of possible mudslides and swollen rivers.

My second typhoon season in Tokyo - but I think last year was very mild. Do they ever shut down businesses and schools and send people home during these things?

Well it's ok by me as the heat was getting a bit too prikly, at least along with the rain the temperature has become a bit more bearable.

the Japanese word "taifu" is always translated as typhoon, regardless of whether the storm is a technically a typhoon or a tropical storm.

Risk-wise, this storm system is not forecast to become a cat 1 typhoon and will remain a tropical storm, one step up from a tropical depression.

We can still put on the rain suits, find some plants that wave in the slightest breeze (palms) and yell into a mic while holding a soggy clipboard with the cameras rolling.

Exactly Lunchmeat!! It reminds me of what American reporters always do when they're hit by some sort of storm. Hilarious, isn't it.
