U.N. author says draft climate report alarmist; pulls out of team in Yokohama

If Tol was a scientist, this would be noteworthy, but he's not.

Star-viking, he's not talking about science. He's not saying the science is wrong. He's not saying global climate change isn't happening (which is what I think many deniers will assume, without reading the article). He was co-writing a section on Economic implications, and wanted more attention / focus on how we can/will adapt rather.

I'm not saying I agree with his optimism. I'm saying his opinion isn't necessarily unworthy of note simply because I don't share it.

Sorry, he was identified as a scientist in the article, and he also commented on a scientific issue, in a very simplistic and blase way:

"Tol said farmers, for instance, could grow new crops if the climate in their region became hotter, wetter or drier. “They will adapt. Farmers are not stupid,” he said."

Nothing about yields, costs, and other factors like the spread of diseases with the changing climates.

The thing is, climate change deniers will, and do trumpet people like Tol as "scientists who deny the science behind climate change". Unless people call him and his ilk out on the rubbish they spout then we might as well surrender and throw science in the rubbish bin.

With importance of this report, getting it right first time, you would think that this huffing and puffing could have been debated in private.

Absolute key aspect, and cheap clean sustainable renewable energies, to replace Nuclear option, IPCC have 209 scientists at their disposal, stop arguing and belly button gazing and get the job done.

I fail to see how more elderly people alive equals to any economic benefit ?

Farmers are not stupid, but apparently Dutch professors are. I guess Tor expects farmers to start farming cacti. In California they've been under drought conditions for over a year. No water falling from the sky means you have to irrigate your crops from the groundwater supply. Only problem is, the groundwater system needs the rains and snows to keep being replenished, and that hasn't been happening. There's a reason only highly specialized plants grow in a desert and we're seeing a climate change that is happening too fast for crops to adapt to.

The doom and gloom stuff about climate change is already known. Don't even need to read the new report to know what it says lol. Why not focus more on what can be done to adapt? Seems like his idea is more useful than just preaching to the choir again and again.
