Ban has convened a nuclear safety summit for the U.N. General Assembly in New York in September and he is expected to reinforce his calls for tougher international standards while in Japan.

This sentence is telling me that Mr. Ki-Moon is going to have a slew of experts with him on his visit to Fukushima, for the summit in New York next month alone Japan is going to be a topic of discussion.

The nuclear crisis simmering? Is this some sort of man-made joke? Govt secretly dumping huge amounts of radioactive material from Fukushima - "The situation is expected to worsen", from ene news.

A 20-kilometer exclusion zone around the battered facility prevents him going much nearer.

Yeah, as if the secretary-general of the freakin' UN couldn't get a pass to go closer should he choose.

No surprises, the UN wouldn't go any nearer than 20km to a place with half a dozen angry Africans armed with wooden sticks.

Also how convenient for him to arrive one day after the Hiroshima commemorations took place, and what's this other agenda he brought with him, request for troop deployment to Africa? obviously he didn't forget that Japan hasn't got tired of giving away free stuff to the UN despite making on headway into stop treating their country as an enemy state.

If the guy came earlier, people would complain. If he came later, people would complain. People will simply complain for the sake of doing so, and that's all. That the man is coming at all to a nuclear hazard site is pretty amazing, giving that Japan refuses to give any information as to what's going on until months after the fact.

I don't imply anything... you simply see what you want to. I don't think it's necessary he come at all -- or that he came soon after the disaster. The only way I see it as beneficial is if anything is revealed that had not previously been so. But given that we're dealing with Japan and TEPCO... well...

Anyway, take a deep breath, my friend, and read comments for what they are -- not what you think they mean.

In his meetings with Japanese leaders, the U.N. chief is also expected to request Japan’s Self-Defense Forces be dispatched for a peace-keeping operation in South Sudan.

Depending on the length of Mr Ki-Moon's visit and the reports he has access to, I'm not so sure he would ask a SDF platoon (s) to leave the country where they are most needed.

His visit is very important assuring Japanese citizens and the world that all problem solving activies of TEPCO and J. Gov have been and will be carefully monitored. No cheating, no shortcut are allowed. I appreciate his visit to Fukushima.
