The government issued the order in the 2004 incident as the second such case
Does the MSDF dared to use live torpedoes? I wonder why the Japanese govt was so foolish when they met hostility.....

The MSDF does not know how long this submarine has stayed inside the Japanese water...that was really scary!

I hope if that unidentified submarine entering Japan they should have done something rather than just sneaking away...it was a waste of oppurtunity!

It was a Russian submarine testing the Japanese army military response. Russia did the same thing for several months before it attack Georgia.

How can the sub be unidentified? Every countries subs have certain characteristics that should make it recognizable. Are we thinking Chinese sub maybe or Russian? If it wasn't American those would be the only 2 likely options.

Iran got two subs from Russia about 8 years ago. I have a hard time believeing that Iranians could work a submarine but this maybe proof and since their still learning how to navigate at sea this could explain why no one knows who's sub it is.

Japan should be fair...if US submarine can sailing freely by their own in Japanese water why not those submarines from other nationalities?
reddragonguy at 11:30 AM JST - 17th September
The Atago chased the submarine and the MSDF deployed a P-3C patrol airplane, two helicopters and three other destroyers to track it down.
What a shame..even with state of the art ASW technologies can done nothing!

USNinJapan2, in reply to: Your post above made about as much sense as a Dr. Seuss rhyme. Some actually sensible content would be helpful to this thread... Obviously, you need to put down the fiction and understand that sense has nothing to do with reality.

Nobody is sure where this submarine is from, but I think it is a good idea to ask the Russins,Chinese, Koreans (both North and South) if they are messing around with subs near Japan.

A periscope-like object? Could it have been a periscope? Ya-think? I'll bet the guys in the sub are laughing (all the way back to China!)

OssanINSECURE,
"t's up to Japan to fix that constitution and build a more offense-capable military"
That's what we're doing. And when we're done, you will be working at a convenience store.

What happen to the DEFENSE part of MSDF? If they need to get permission to raise or sink a ship, especially a sub, then you do not need a MSDF. What was the famous or infamous comment by a US watch commander at Pearl Harbor when a sub was sighted just before 7am on Dec. 7th, 1941; "Confirmation". Maybe the third time they will get their confirmation. Seems that the MSDF is a shark with no teeth. And all you smugglers and NK kidnappers, come over. We can not stop you if by a remote change we see you in the act.
