Stop calling it Iwo Jima AP. The name officially reverted back to the original Iwo-To years ago.

Am not sure of why they object, uninhabited island. Maybe they use their objection to gain votes. This issue is very different from the new airfield in Okinawa since no one will be affected.

Just leave permanently. Problem solved :)

Iwojima is a dangerous move. People living in Atsugi City and other areas made a choice and knew about the noise. I did too.

They can't. The Japanese government won't let them.

Explain. How is leaving yourself virtually defenseless to your heavily armed neighbors (with whom you have numerous territorial and resource-related disputes) a solution? Gonna plus up the SDF and remove their legal restraints? Either Japan rearms or maintains its 'peaceful' nation status but can't have it both ways.

USNinJapan2, we can hold off any one of the three, China, North Korea or Russia. At least long enough for American reinforcements to arrive. North Korea and Russia are not strong enough to be a military threat against Japan. The military of North Korea is obsolete and is mainly ground forces. Same is true for China, so they would have to swim to get across or use slow transports. Back to subject, I can see the why now of the new airfield. Yes of course the pilots need an alternate airfield on which to land. Not having one increases the danger to the pilots.

USNinJapan2 - Because I do not believe all of the 'scare tactics' that the US spoon feeds just to scare it's citizens and other nations. I get the feeling that the US military is nothing more than a money making machine (SCAM) for those that own/control the weapons and defense manufactures (who are these people I wonder??? any vested interests). Ergo, they will say and do anything to keep the population scared and on constant edge to justify milking the system for billions in profits every year.

Plus on top of that, the US nation is broke (trillions in debt and almost close to defaulting on its commitments). The US government cannot afford a ham sandwich yet alone the 100's of billions it spends on it's military each year. Remind me again, who actually benefits financially from all this so called 'defense' spending.... And at the end of the day, do you feel as if any progress is being made in reducing global violence and aggression??? Exactly.

Actually, who defended who? Japan defended US or US defended Japan in the past 66years? It was very very funny when Japanese met her hostile neighbours:North,South Koreans,Chinese, Russians etc. Living under the threat of 'vengeances from neighbours' was definately hellish but living under the 'scare tactics' of her' protector was equally unwise! You coulnt find another country in this world as embrassment like Japan's situation. The Germans has already get rid of those' yesterday embarasment' but the Japanese still has no idea where is 'exit'!

You remind of the guy who didn't want to pay his taxes but is glad when the fire department saves his house from a fire...

Wrong. I have no concerns about paing my taxes. Also a fire department is a worthy public service that does not going around creating fear and trying to scare everyone to justify its massive budget. You remind me of a typical septic who is gullible enough to believe the BS your government feeds you. Step outside of your closed box and see things from an independent perspective. Then you might just start to realize why most of the world hates US foreign policy.

Sorry USNinJapan but its a derogitory word used by the British and Australians for a Yank or American. Was mainly used in the 40's

It's rhyming slang. Septic tank = Yank.

Yeah, I remember Stranger in a Strange Land calling me Septic last week because that's the childishness name-calling he needed to fall back to after he was obviously at a lost for any reasonable words. I still don't get that one though.... I'm not from the States.

No No not blaming you or spidapig24 for educating me on this, rather juvenile, word 'septic'.
