witnesses report hearing ‘‘sounds of explosion,’’

Probably the heated gas in the carbonated drinks inside...

    Oyagi,

It could have been a tobacco machine. A frustrated salaryman in need of a smoke and without a taspo card but with a lighter could have done the damage.

romulus3 - Except in the article it says 'beverage vending machines.' Maybe that was added after your comment, though.

    fireant,

maybe, maybe not. I still have a beer haze from last night in shimbashi. I will reprase it. It could have been a very drunk salaryman, looking for cigarettes blindly and mistaking a beverage machine for a tobacco machine and not having a taspo card but a lighter and a pocket full of docomo tissues from the morning "ohio" girls in mini skirts, setting fire to it out of frustration.

The Local Rumour Mill has it that a young woman was seen running from the scene, screaming:

pantsu ga moete iru, pantsu ga moete iru! Dare ka, tasukete!!!!!

Soon after she was seen to enter a nearby love hotel with 2 men in business suits.

It is not known if they were able to extinguish the flames, but all 3 emerged with stupid grins on their faces an hour later.
