TOKYO —
Weather information company Weathernews Inc. will buy the decommissioned icebreaker Shirase, which completed 25 years of service last year in supporting Japan’s Antarctic expedition and could have ended up as scrap metal, a government panel said Monday.
‘‘The old Shirase is a Japanese treasure. We hope to revive it as a place from which to distribute information on the earth’s environment and climate change,’’ a Weathernews official said of the company’s plan use the vessel as such a facility at a port in Chiba Prefecture and open it to the public. The new Shirase, which will replace the old one, is scheduled to leave Tokyo on Tuesday for an Antarctic expedition.
