Looking at Japanese style homes – I have noticed that the stairs are frequently near the kitchen door, providing a perfect chimney. Also, no smoke curtains – that short wall that hangs down from the ceiling to roll and turn the heated air and smoke. The second storey is frequently smaller than the lower, eliminating second storey balconies which might provide a means of escape. And the distance between lower ceiling and upper floor is deeper (allowing for larger beams to provide greater spans) which allows for heat to build. Due to design, Japanese homes should have many smoke detectors.

cause under investigation? meantime, it appears one more case of murder-suicide.

What are you on about? People do die in fires you know - so often that some here on JT like to rant about the lack of smoke alarms in wooden houses.
Meantime, it appears one more case of tragic and avoidable death through smoke inhalation.

Does anyone suspect the estranged husband? Collecting insurance has got to be better than paying alimony.
