Woman hit and killed by train while trying to help elderly man who fell on tracks

My heart goes out to this brave woman. She decided to do something instead of just sitting in her car and hoping someone else would help. She's a hero in my book. RIP young lady.

Brave, but stupid. IIRC, trains are designed with enough ground clearance that as long as you lie flat and are not particularly fat, the train will go (just) over you (which probably is why the old man lived).

This is one case where rescue should definitely be left to the professionals, who would at least know if all trains have stopped.

She did what we all aspire to be. A hero in our last moments. If there is a heaven then that should be how you get into it.

What the article left out is the fact that she was in the car which her father was driving. The shock of her father is immeasurable. A very brave woman. May God Bless her Soul.

CrazyJoe...Thanks for the extra bit of sad news. You are absolutely right! Her father must be devastated to see his daughter give her life like that. Although devastated, I hope he is proud that he was able to raise a daughter that could put a strangers life before hers. To make matters more sad, the man she saved was probably close to The same age as him.

With two young kids and a loving wife at home, I have always wondered if I would have the balls to jump on the track and attempt a rescue with very little time to react before the train was on top of me. Any miscalculation on my part spelling a certain and a quite painful death.

I hate to make it a numbers game, but I wouldn't risk my life, thus leaving my young kids fatherless for an elderly person. Sounds harsh but there it is.

One day you live your life as usual and the next day you're suddenly gone. That old guy is forever in her debt!

Looks like JR will sue the elderly man who fell down for disrupting and stopping the rail operation for loss revenue ..... but will the family of this good brave lady sue JR for the negligence causing her death please!!!

Because this wasn't at a station. It said it happened between Nakayama and Kamoi stations. This was at a road crossing.

She died a hero ..I know I wouldn't have the guts to do it. RIP brave lady..the world has lost another selfless person

Rest in Peace to Natsue. She is the definition of a selfless hero. I am sure the old man would trade places with her in a second if he could.

Of course they could put buttons here, but then punks would probably push them all the time.

inverse - if I'm not mistaken, there are emergency buttons even at road crossing.

How awful... and tragic !! By far an outstanding samaritan displaying great courage in reaching out the need of a potential hopeless elder. RIP to this brave woman !! I wonder if there were others who stood by - let it happened, and did nothing to prevent this terrible incident.

This is a brave woman in anyone's eyes. You say that it was a waste, we never truly know what we are capable of until we are in that same situation. I don't believe she made a mistake she made a choice to take action when others did not. If she had done nothing and the old man died, could she have lived with the guilt? The fact she left the salty of her father's car to help a stranger tells me she probably couldn't have lived know she could have something. We never know, even those who say they would have done nothing may act differently, and those who say they would have helped may not. She woman had the right stuff, perfect person or not, a hero all the same. Again RIP.

A month ago a man helped a woman who fallen in track successfully. But here she has lost. Anyway great lady.

It's hard to find words to do justice to her selfless act. All I can think of are the clichéd epithets, but they are all relevant here: Brave. Respect. True hero.

Truely courageous. Risking your life to save a stranger is the ultimate in bravery.

It reminds me of a small park in central London that has plaques dedicated to the bravery of individuals, telling the story of how each one gave their life trying to save others. Very moving place.

Genuinely moving. Am going to refrain from moaning about the excessive use of 'RIP' on this occasion.
