Workman buried alive after cave-in at Shibuya construction site

A 44-year-old workman died after being buried alive in a cave-in at a construction site in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, on Monday.

According to police, the accident occurred at 11:50 a.m. at the construction site in Dogenzaka. NTV reported that the workman, Junji Yamada, and his colleagues had been digging a three-meter-deep hole when the cave-in occurred. Yamada was buried alive.

Police said it took rescue workers three hours to dig him out and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hang on! It took them three hours to dig him out of a 3m hole? That doesn't sound right! What were they using, teaspoons? I think there is a bit more to this scenario than this brief article states. It was rainy and wet today, which would have made the ground unstable. Why were he and the others in the bottom of the hole if it was not shored up? Something is very fishy about this. It doesn't seem like a workplace accident. It seems more like a major breach of workplace safety standards.

In fact, the space he was working in was NOT shored up, against more recent standards. Fatal error in judgment.
