Yamanote line likely to get first new station in 40 years
TOKYO —
JR East said Wednesday it is studying the possibility of adding a new station to the Yamanote line in Tokyo between Shinagawa and Tamachi stations—a distance of 2.2 kilometers. If the plan is realized, it will be the first new station on the line in about 40 years, JR East said in a statement.
The area is currently a JR train depot and storage yards. It has been designated as part of a major commercial redevelopment project starting in 2013, which the Tokyo metropolitan government hopes will attract more foreign enterprises to Tokyo due to its proximity to Haneda airport.
The Yamanote line loop currently has 29 stations. The last station to be added was Nishi-Nippori in 1971.

Train talk yeah. Distance between Shinagawa and Tamachi stations is 2.2km - the longest between stations on the Yamanote loop (total length of the line is 34.5km).
New station would be operational in 2020 at the earliest. The Keihin Tohoku line would also pass through it.

What Tokyo badly needs is a train connection between Shibuya and Roppongi stations, but that would have to be a subway rather than JR.
The new station between Shinagawa and Tamachi would need to be a junction station to really bring in the traffic.

Cool, a new station on the yamanote line after 40 years?? For older people, I think the Yamanote line is great, or say for women and small children, since taxis are way too expensive here in Japan, even with out a TIP!

i dont know why they dont invest that money into building better barriers on each of the stations on the yamanote line instead of wasting money on ads telling people not to fall onto the tracks. i dont have any problems with the new station esp if it adds to the economy but how about concern for the public's safety

i don't think a new station is really needed. what they really need to do is new subway lines/stations connecting places that badly need direct connections.
p.s. they also need to get the tokoyites that live inside the yamanote line to stop thinking life only exists inside the yamanote line. i've meet a few girls who wouldn't date me just because i live outside it.

Fix the grade on the Yamanote. Too much space between track and open doors.

Babe, hate to break it to you, but I know quite a few girls who have used similar lines! They are trying to be "nice" about it! :( sorry!

@Nicky! Tee Hee!
I think the trains here are amazing! Great service, on time, clean! Not sure another station is needed though. Seems a small distance to me!

Heard about this from a real estate agent. He was recommending to buy an apartment close to where the station is planned as prices will be sure to rise when the news is released. Probably too late now.

with the number of vacant offices in Tamachi area, I don't think this is going to help any business other than the one that makes the station, complete waste of money

If you build it, they will come...
Why not name the station "Iowa" ?!

Speaking of the Yamanote line, it was originally supposed to run through Asakusa but locals rejected the plan. That's why the upper right side of the line has a weird shape. However, Asakusa got the first subway in Japan, the Ginza line that ran from Asakusa to Ueno. Anyway, I'm all for the new station :)

Most likely JR has some real estate in front of this yet to be built station...and they will cash in.

I think the Yamanote line is must see for all first time visitors to Tokyo right in the morning rush hour!!

Most public transportation infrastructure plans are, in the end, driven by politics. JR isn't the only entity who'll end up profiting from this, only the most obvious one.

Agreed. What Tokyo badly needs is all that time and money put towards a solution to stop all the jinshinjikko accidents involving people "falling" onto the tracks.
The posters and TV CM don't seem to be doing enough.

haha - well said Moderator, most of the people making absurd comments about this positive news probably won't be here in 2 years, let alone 10!

?? That's kind of funny.
Girl: I really had a great time tonight. Thanks for all those drinks you bought me. You're sweet" Boy: Hey how about I see you next week? Girl: Sorry, you really are a nice guy, but it'll never work...you, well.. .you live outside the Yamanote Line!
I think Nicky is right. But surely, SHE hasn't used that line...

Those songs that have all of the stations of the Yamanote Line that was a meme a couple of years ago would now have to be rewritten. When I go to Tokyo, the Yamanote is my lifeline. It's one of the world's most useful rail lines.
