Anyone for tea

Homeware shops are bursting with all kinds of odd kitchen implements, but few are more playful than this teapot by Sakari Iwashimizu. The Museum of Modern Art handpicked the pot for its New York retail store — and now MoMA’s first store outside the U.S., in Omotesando, stocks it too.

The Melon Tea Pot is more than just a deliciously simple idea. Brothers Sakari and Hisao Iwashimizu founded a nambu tetsu (cast iron) workshop in Misuzawa, Iwate Prefecture, to preserve this most Japanese of arts. Between them they’ve nurtured a fresh crop of artisans, producing everything from kettles and teapots to incense holders. The region is fast becoming a leader in design and quality cast iron work.

Iwashimizu’s Melon teapot comes with a stainless steel mesh infuser that sits inside a hand-finished cast iron body, complete with a special moss green glaze. Now that’s our cup of tea.
