App-enabled geiger counter for smartphones

Okay, we were skeptical on this one at first glance, but these devices do exist: what we’ve got here is a plug-and-play Geiger counter that fits any smartphone headphone jack (iOS or Android - no love for Blackberry until they finally give up and accept their Google overlords). It’s definitely the smallest we’ve ever seen.

Thanko isn’t the OEM here, the Smart Geiger is actually made by a Korean firm called FTLab, with Thanko distributing here in Japan. The dongle is as simple as can be, and the app looks well made, but of course that’s hard to ascertain from screenshots.

If Thanko and FTLabs video tests are to be believed, the Smart Geiger dongle is every bit as effective as stand-alone handheld Geiger counters that run well into three figures - whereas this one is ¥4,980. They do of course include the caveat that this device provides general reference data and not necessarily highly accurate, definitive measures.

Specs: Dimensions: 10 x 10 x 47mm (32mm when plugged-in) Weight: 6g Smartphone Compatibility: iOS 7+; Android 2.2+ Radiological Sensing: Gamma Rays; X-Rays Sensor Range: 0.1 ~ 200 uSv / h Price: ¥4,980 Click through to shop Thanko at Amazon.com!

Just 5 cents of my personal experience,

Using a SOEKS commercial geiger counter costing below ¥20,000 readings as follows below :

AVERAGE background readings( Not the peaks) : Koriyama (80km away from Daiichi Nuclear plant) 0.30+ uSv/h

Aizuwakamatsu (100km away from Daiichi Nuclear plant) 0.12+ uSv/h

Cape Inubo (230km way from Daiichi Nuclear plant) 0.15+ uSv/h (Chiba Prefecture)

Tokyo 0.16+ uSv/h, Underground (subways in Tokyo) 0.08+ uSv/h

Long distance flight (High altitude) 1.60+ uSv/h (Status: Dangerous levels)

Singapore (cosmic or electronic radiation?) 0.20+ uSv/h

Pulau Tioman(Malaysia) 0.08+ uSv/h (lack of radiation electronics?)

Scalar energy pendant (placed beside the exposed tube sensor) 0.50+ uSv/h (Status: High radiation)

Nothing detected from bananas. Yes, they do have natural radiation.
