'Buzz off' never sounded better

Keep the bloodsuckers at bay this summer with the Reina Castro, a gadget that does the unthinkable: makes mosquito repellents cool. This squat cube is available in white, black, lime green and acid pink models — no prizes for guessing which we prefer — and uses Earth Nomat bottles, which are sold at most pharmacies and supermarkets.

Much as it’s trading on its good looks, the Castro is no slouch in the functionality department: it comes with an 8-hour timer and auto power-off function, and the electric cord can be retracted into the main body of the unit for easy storage. (Metropolis)

Reina Castro, 3,990 yen. Available from Design Store Tokyo: 5-10-2 Minami-Aoyama, Minato-ku. Tel: 03-3407-3700. Nearest station: Omotesando, exit B1.

It is a more sensible shape than the usual domes, which also turn an unattractive gray very quickly. How big is it?

I have to admit to a fondness for the smell of katori senko - incense coil mosquito repellant - over these chemical smells.

Nomat gives me a raspy throat. Maybe I've got some mosquito DNA in me.

At least with the katori senko, the smell and the smoke remind you that you're sending toxins into the air, so you can put it out once all the mozzies are out of the room.

Mr Cleo is a dab hand at catching mozzies, which he feeds to the tropical fish.

own an iphone, itouch, or anything "i" and you can download software that will broadcast this tone for free. no need to run out and spend more money on junk.

Personally I love the coils you burn.

I had a flock of bats to keep the mosquitoes under control. But their bites were even worse.

I think those ceramic pigs that burns the coils are much cuter, although cleaning up the ash is a drag...

The only really new thing about this seems to be a price approaching 4,000 yen. I suppose you could say a power cable to trip over instead of a battery is a feature.
