Cutting the cords

Cutting the cords

With Wi-Fi already well on the way to eliminating cables for internet connections at home, the next target is the nest of wires behind most TV sets. Working with 15 of the country’s biggest technology companies, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications is pushing research on a super-fast way to beam high-definition video from receiver boxes to TV screens, wherever they may be.

Even more ambitiously, the body also hopes to send the electricity to power the devices across the airwaves from wall sockets, thereby eliminating pretty much every cord left. Look for something commercial around 2015. (Metropolis)

Cordless electricity?? How the hell does that work? And does it mean I'll get electrocuted by drinking a beer between the wall socket and my giant imaginary flatscreen?

It already works in many chargers but at very short range.

My electric toothbrush charges by induction - no physical contact.

Well, I'd never heard of it before... And my dad's an electrician. If you have to be so close to the socket, is there any point >.>
