Japan News and Discussion
Panasonic will release earphones targeting women consumers. The product name is Moon Jewel, and was designed by a team of women in their 20s and 30s. This is the first time ever for an audiovisual product planned by an all-woman crew to hit the market.
The earphones were modeled according to the average woman consumer to ensure a snug and secure fit for all. They come in 12 colors and are adorned with cubic zirconia, a diamond simulant, to satisfy even the most style-conscious.
Tomomi Azuma, one of the members of the project team, explained, “We were able to attain comfort without sacrificing style.” The market price is anticipated to be around 2,500 yen, and the monthly production to be 30,000. On sale July 7.

Hey, designer ladies: I wish you could realize that women do not necessarily need to be "stylish" all the time, with diamonds and stars and pinky things hanging around them. Why don't you design neutral unisex headphones? You don't feel able to desing a black gadget? For some of us women, those colours are childish and ugly. Black or metallic is simply more elegant. Grow up, girlies.

"cubic zurconia, a diamond simulant"
Is there a ruby simulant, and if there is, what is it called?

Nothing says cheap and childish like cubic zirconia encrusted headphones. However, now that I know what it takes to be stylish in Tokyo, I'll be calling my mom to see if she still has my bedazzler from junior high.

Gotta love gender-based merchandizing! Japanese designers are so very cutting edge - seriously.

why sell one product to both men and women, when you can sell two products, one to each! it's a bit like when they decided they needed to create men's pocky, so that men could eat pocky. :/

well, maybe they'll at least be smaller than regular ear buds- every brand i've tried has been too big for my wee ear holes :(
kyolicious at 01:41 PM JST - 1st July
I think other posters may be ignoring that perhaps men and women have different sized ears ... and the impression I got from the article was that they would be designed for the ears of women. In addition to being sparkly.

Parts cost 150 yen, assembled in China = you pay 2500yen. Who is winning here?

Women's earphones, men's chocolate. What gives? ;)
DeepAir65 at 10:58 PM JST - 1st July
who cares what they look like - what do they sound like? That's the only question worth anything when talking about headphones!
nemoflow at 02:03 AM JST - 2nd July
Exactly, DeepAir65. A 2500円 set of earphones are not manufactured with sonic fidelity in mind though, to be fair. Imagine how much of the 150yen that goes into building these pieces of sh@ is reserved for the drivers...

What is with Japan and designing so many things towards women? Aren't they arrogant and spoiled enough to beging with?
