It’s a fair bet that there aren’t many iPhone applications on the market from companies whose history dates back to 1755, so a new Japanese dictionary from Pearson Longman and local firm Enfour clearly deserves some kind of award.
The 2,260 yen bilingual Longman English-Japanese Dictionary contains the usual 100,000 or so headwords and phrases, as well as tons of illustrations and photos. Best of all, it can use the iPhone or iPod touch’s audio capabilities to play back pronunciation guides, which is kinda neat for beginners.
It should be noted that the app is intended for Japanese learners of English, but anyone with a reasonable understanding of kanji should be able to derive equal benefit. (J Mark Lytle/Metropolis)
