Kirin announces a new Cola Shock

Kirin announces a new Cola Shock

Kirin Beverages plans to make improvements to its cola and vodka canned cocktail, Cola Shock. The new product will have stronger carbonation, while the sweetness of the beverage has been toned down. A new label design will complete the package.

The 350-milliliter can will cost 148 yen.

What is the alcohol content? This product probably wouldn't be allowed on the market in U.S. because of underage drinking concern.

Not necessarily true. There is a Jack Daniels branded Cola and Whiskey drink can be purchased in any grocery store that sells alcohol in the U.S. Also we have tons of fruit sodas with alcohol in them called "hard lemonade" and "wine coolers".

Wish I could be in Japan to try this!

The alcohol content is 5%; notice that the can is labeled 'sake', the same as third-category beer.

motogaijin: I think the difference is where it marketed. State by state might by different but I tend to think Cola Shock would be in liquor stores while in Japan on the shelves of convenience everywhere. 3rensho: I thought third-catagory beer had extremely low alcohol so is this a loophole?

No, it's low malt. They have the same approximate alcohol content as a regular beer.

I file this under the same category as a wine cooler or chu hai. I didn't like the original cola shock - sounds like something I would like but the taste wasn't all that good.

It's like the UDL's they sell in Australia. Not bad, it does the required task.

Looked up on Wiki and it is a tax loophole. Can't read so no wonder I was bewildered when I went to a Lawson to buy a beer!

I guess. I live in a state that has some of the most liberal liquor laws in the US. You can buy hard liquor at gas stations and grocery stores here, so you'd be able to get it pretty easily if they sold it where I live.

So currently it does not sell that well.

I almost unwittingly bought one of these on my lunch break thinking it was cola. The boss wouldn't have been happy.
