If you’ve never tried traditional Japanese sweets, you will find that they are certainly very different from those in the west. They are not as sweet and are often made of mochi, azuki bean paste, nuts and fruits.

Known as "wagashi" in Japanese, there are thousands of shops in cities all over Japan that sell these kinds of desserts. One such shop in the old capital, Kyoto, is showing off its history and creativity with a limited-edition summer sweet: “A night full of stars”.

Kameya Kiyonaga is a Japanese confectioner that has a very rich history dating back to around 1617. This summer, for a limited time, the sweets shop is selling a very unique confectionery that is so breathtaking, you’ll probably feel bad when you take a bite out of it.

Not only does the packaging remind us of a cloudless night, but the sweet itself is a beautiful representation of the starry sky. This visually stunning dessert combines jelly and "yokan" (red bean paste, agar and sugar), but it also has hints of both passionfruit and lemon. The store recommends chilling the dessert in order to bring out even more of the flavors. We don’t think there could be anything more perfect than eating it while gazing at the summer constellations.

This beautiful treat comes in two sizes, a small one for 750 yen and a medium one for 1,100 yen. If you’re in Kyoto for summer vacation, be sure to check Kameya Kiyonaga for this delicious and artistic sweet. You might want to go to the shop early in the morning because this item is extremely popular and often is sold out.
