It is against the law to text while riding?

It looks weak to hold a iPhone on the upper side for a bike or bicycle. The iPhone seems to fall off them by vibration of curbs on the road.

It's bad enough that car drivers are distracted with mobile phones and car navigation systems, having cyclists doing the same will just give rise to more fatalities...

Last I checked they are illegal, same way that those Umbrella holders are illegal to be used. Current fines: Use an umbrella (handheld or holder) = 50.000Yen, use a keitai = 30.000Yen.

Not sure but one of my cycle shops been selling iPhone Holders for the last Year, for about the same price.

Good idea for navigation but we all know that it won't be used for that.

Using a mobile phone or even holding an umbrella on a bike in Japan is illegal.

I always text while riding my bike while holding my umbrella and drinking a beer.

But just think of the other ways you could spice up an otherwise monotonous bike ride: Tetris while coasting down Roppongi Dori. Updating your Facebook status during a relaxing ride through Yoyogi Park. The possibilities are endless.

Is it too much to ask that Japantoday not encourage apparently illegal activities?

I use a RAM mount to hold my Garmin GPS on my bike. Well designed, well made and lets you mount your phone or GPS on almost anything. Very useful for finding Izakaya pubs before heading home.

The tone of the article is ridiculous, but the product looks like it could really be useful. There are many speedometer, distance-tracking, and location-tracking applications for the iPhone.

I think the myriad of regulations regarding what you can hold or look at while driving or cycling can be distilled to one basic one: in any collision, whoever is looking at a mobile phone is guilty. Doesn't matter if it's a one-ton automobile and a little child. If you're focusing on something other than your surroundings, you're at fault.

Many Japanese bike riders are stupid enough already. They do not need any encouragement. 3,600 yen would be better spent on a headlight or batteries for an existing one and a rear light, which is rare in Japan, and maybe some reflective tape.

Japan does not need more laws; some of the important existing need to be enforced.

Awesome product. I have been waiting a long time for something like this. I ride my fixie a lot around Tokyo and when I plan long rides or am going to an unfamiliar place I use my iphone GPS. If it's mounted, you have both hands available for control/braking and is better than the alternative. Surprised at all the negative nancies on here... but then again this is JT.

Can this product help me find my bike at the ocean of parked iron at the train station or if someone steals it? I know that I left it is in the public area, it is the black one with black tires, a basket on the front and a lock on the rear wheel. This is my Ap, and it is for sale.

I think the iphone holder is great, especially for the GPS. But, what I would really like is a system to hold my 13 inch Mac Air.

Smartphones (not just iphones) with GPS functionality are awesome bike computers. Best thing is the GPS still works without a sim card so your old phone can become a permanent bike computer. Cat-eye et al must be losing sales to smartphones. These holders serve a useful purpose, but tweeting and playing games? - nice joke JT.

Why have you been waiting? This is just one of many products already on the market that do the same thing. There are even water resistant ones like the BioLogic Bike Mount for just 200 yen more that let you navigate in the rain.
