Nikon’s new AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR lens, to be released on March 14, is a fast and versatile lens that covers a wide range from 80mm of focal length to ultra-telephoto, suitable for photo shoots of wild animals, landscapes, sports, trains, airplanes, etc.
The optical system includes one Super ED lens and 4 ED lens and Nano Crystal Coat. It also has high-end camera shake correction system and SWM (Silent Wave Motor) is built in.
Price: 325,500 yen.

F2.8 would be fast, not 5.6.

True, but there is only one lens with this focal length at 2.8 and it is huge - http://www.digitalpixels.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/sigma-200-500.jpg

You certainly don't want to lug around a beast like a 400mm f2.8 lens if not absolutely necessary. Therefore f5.6 is quite reasonable for most applications. Much more heavy than the lens is it's price tag :-(
