PIXUS printers for SOHO use
New Products ( 10 )
Canon has three new models in the inkjet printer PIXUS product line. The print speed and user friendliness have been enhanced, and offers a wider range of A4 sizes suitable for Soho’s (small offices and home offices).
The MX870 prints at 6.1ipm, compared to 5.6ipm of conventional models. L size borderless printing takes 33 seconds, two seconds faster that earlier models. The automatic document feeder (ADF) handles up to a maximum of 35 A4 size sheets. The control panel is arranged by function according to “copy” or “fax” and easier to operate.
Open price, retail price expected to be in the 30,000-yen range.

Can this printer print double sided?

No, the mechanism for double-sided printing is quite complex and costly. Besides, due to ink absorbency issues, double-sided printing is better left to laser printers...

It does print both sides. Most of the newer Pixus's print double sided. There's also a feeder tray down the bottom to store more paper. Look up Pixma MX870 and you'll find out more information. In the States it's called Pixma. I bought another Pixus lower model, and that also prints double sided.

Also, check out the Canon website, you can view the Japanese site (search for Pixus MX870 in Google), and look for スペシャルサイト on the right hand side, you can watch a short flash, on how the printer works. These Pixus printers are better than the Colorio series by Epson. You can scan documents, and use it like a photocopier. It uses 5 colored cartridges, and prints pretty fast. The quality of the photos printed are quite good. The printer can be networked (Ethernet cable), or it can use Wifi (if you have a Nitendo Wii Wireless connector that uses AOSS, you can use that also). You can open up the lid and use the top as a flat bed scanner or feed in single sheets in the lid, to do a double page copy. There's also a USB port, and it has a multimedia card reader. The MX870 looks like it faxes also. The MP640 is the non-fax version which is equally good.
The software you get will be in Japanese, but it's pretty intuitive, just look at the American website, and you can download the manual. It's exactly the same. With the MP640, the menu features on the screen can be changed to English (so the MX is probably the same). I heard you can't use the American Canon ink in a Japanese printer, maybe it's something to do with the electronic connectors.
You can try it out at Yodobashi camera, there's a discount at the moment. I highly recommend it.

Thanks for the advise. I own a EPSON EP-902A that can does double sided printing (with a separately sold option) and I often use that feature to safe on paper. The "inc absorbency issue" mentioned above is solved by the printer as it waits based on the content printed on the front page (text/picture rich) before printing the back side.

Glad to help. I agree lasers better, but it's too expensive I think.
I have the Pixus MP640, and highly recommend it.
The Pixus MP640 also has a CD printing tray (Maybe the MX870 has it as well). In the States the don't supply the tray in the box, but the Japanese version comes with a USB cable, the CD tray, a power cable, some sample photo paper, the ink cartridges and the software CD.
The top bed scanner is great. Everything also closes away nicely so there's no open bits for extra dust to get in. I think the only bad reviews have been are the ink runs out faster because the cartridges are smaller (there's 5). But the ink is cheaper than other printer inks I've seen, only 980yen at Biccamera. I haven't gone through my ink cartridges yet but so far no feeding problems, no smudging, and even the draft (fast) copy looks really good.

Personally I need a normal Black & White printer that will work in my basement Den & the 'used' Okidata will not print, due to jamming feeding, in the colder room that might be looked upon as damp. Though hard to believe the latter even with warmed up paper & this is a dry dramatic part of Canada.
So I will be looking around, but have to admit first of all will be another PC for mine is six or seven yrs old with old Windows 98.

steen, i "think", not positive, but possibly, if you just leave out the cartridges you don't use it will still print the black. worth a shot .
