Powerful slim vacuum cleaner

By Tsunoru Nakashima

Hitachi Appliances Inc will release on Feb 21 a cordless cyclone vacuum cleaner whose suction power is about 10 times stronger than its predecessor.

Hitachi Appliances realized the strong suction power of the cleaner, "Power Boost Cyclone PV-BC500," by using a newly developed brushless motor.

The new vacuum cleaner can be used both as a "stick type" and "handy type." For example, it can be used as a stick type by extending the extension pipe of the handle for floor cleaning and as a handy type by rotating the handle to clean a desktop, chair, car interior, etc.

"The center of gravity is near the floor in the stick mode and near the hand in the handy mode so that less load is applied to the hand," Hitachi Appliances said.

It takes about 3.5 hours to fully charge the 2,500mAh lithium-ion (Li-ion) rechargeable battery of the cleaner. The cleaner can be continuously used for about 30 minutes in the normal mode and about eight minutes in the high-power mode.

In a demonstration, Hitachi Appliances used the cleaner to lift up a 3-kg bowling ball to show its suction power. While the predecessor uses an alternating-current brushless motor, the new cleaner is equipped with a high-revolution direct-current brushless motor.

The company realized the small, light-weight motor by using glass fiber-based composite resin for its casing and blade. Also, it improved motor efficiency by about 20% by optimizing its revolution speed at 85,000rpm.

The expected retail price of the cleaner is ¥80,000.

Geesh, the vacuum isn't the only thing that sucks.

Ballsahoy, you said it! was seriously thinking about buying this until I saw that price. People wonder why Japan Inc. is falling. I put a premium on quality over everything else but this price is double what I would pay and I'm sure Dyson makes one just as good for much less. I want strong suction but it doesn't need to be able to suck up a bowling ball.

I live in the US but we have some Japanese 100 volt Panasonic bagged canister vacuums. They are much better than anything you can buy in the US. I found one on line and bought it out of curiosity. I was testing it outside on 120 volts (in case we had fireworks) and no problems. I draped two fingers over the hose end to test the power. It pulled my fingers in and the suction hit was so hard it sent a wave up the hose lifting the vacuum off the ground! My wife just smiled and said "i want that vacuum". We have a new Miele too, but once my wife started using the Panasonic she won't touch the Miele. We especially like how the power brush can be used on any kind of carpet or hard floor. We also like how the attachments are built into the hose handle. With the Miele we have to bend over to fetch attachments, and have to change brushes going from hard floors to carpets. No need with the Panasonic and it cleans terrific. It is also very light and handy. Once in a while I drag out the 40 something year old Kenmore that still does a fantastic job of cleaning but it's big, heavy and takes a bit of assembly to get ready to clean with it.

Hitachi makes a great canister vacuum too but their power brushes are not quite as good at digging dog hair out of carpets as the Panasonics are. Just our experience. The Miele hasn't been used in years now. The Euro-snobs will sniff but that's how it is.
