SLR style compact digital camera
New Products ( 7 )
Hoya is selling a compact digital camera, the PENTAX Optio I-10, with a design resembling a single lens reflex camera. The product is styled like a film SLR camera with a protruding center while maintaining a compact and cute look. Hoya aims to attract consumers by differentiating the design and appearance from mainstream super slim cameras.
Retail price is expected to be around 30,000 yen. Available in two colors, pearl white and classic black.

I was hyped about this when it was first announced last month, but then realized that beyond the retro-cool casing lies a pretty generic digital point and shoot. There are much better cameras on the market for this amount of money.

For even less you can get The Real Thing: http://page18.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/w48334352

I have an Option from a few years ago. The screen is small and dark. It takes afwul shots in low light and the shutter lag is dreadful. It's very compact, but that7s about it.

Agreed. Or for even less money and a smaller size get an old Pentax film SLR. I have a Pentax MG from the 80s that still works great.

This seems to be a clear case of form over function. There is no reason to make the camera larger than is has to be just to be "cute!"
