Toy shinkansen 'Linear Liner'

Takara Tomy has proudly debuted a "Linear Liner" shinkansen/bullet train toy. It's planned to be out for sale in September.

The toy train is a miniature version of the new Maglev shinkansen (bullet train) that is currently in testing by Central Japan Railway Company (JR Tokai). The real train stably drives runs at speeds well in excess of 500 km per hour.

The Linear Liner toy drives with the same magnetic mechanism as the actual "Linear" shinkansen. It floats a bit by magnetic energy, making a 2mm gap between the vehicle and the rail, and runs at 6 to 7 km per hour, which makes the speed over 500 kmh according to scale speed (a measure of how fast a vehicle drives in relation to the full size model).

The external side of the rail is made with clear plastic so you can see the gap above the rail while the Linear Liner runs.

Estimated Price: ¥37,800

That's awesome. I wonder if there is going to be anyone who tweaks this thing to run much faster. Seems like there would be a potential to run it tens of kms/hr faster, if not more..

Great, but too fast.

I suddenly miss my Hornby 'N' gauge.

That's a pretty cool 21st century toy.
