USB wall outlet

Japanese electronics giant Panasonic recently unveiled an invention so awesome and totally logical we can’t help but wonder why it took so long for someone to introduce it.

Behold, the USB wall outlet; a riff on the standard two-prong outlet that features an extra socket for USB devices. In an age where probably more than half of the devices we use on a daily basis are USB-powered, it’s a wonder that it took until now for someone to come forward with a product like this.

Most tech companies seemed content to address USB-device recharging with expensive adapters until now, but Panasonic’s revolutionary outlet will no doubt cut into those companies’ bottom line by letting users skip the adapter and plug tablets, smartphones, E-Readers and the like directly into the wall, as the gods no doubt originally intended.

Now, instead of having to shuffle through your cluttered box of USB adapters like some kind of filthy caveman, you can just go directly to your nearest outlet, plug that sucker in, and get back to watching boobs and murder and stuff on the latest episode of "Game of Thrones" on your iPad.

Panasonic says the outlet will run you around 4,350 yen per installation and can be placed on your own existing outlets with a screwdriver and some basic electrical understanding. In other words, we’ll be calling either our landlord or our uncle to have ours installed.

I went wow, I am off to Super Viva Home to buy one ! But then reasoning kicked in, 4300 yen ?????? And only one location?

I really don't see how this is all that groundbreaking. All USB charged devices come with their own power cables, and there are basically two formats being used: Apple's and micro-USB. I don't see how managing 2 sets of cables is that hard. Also Apple's USB to 2 prong converter is really small and supports USB to micro-USB cables as well. No need to install a new power outlet for 4300 yen.

I've had one with 4 USB slots, that ya could adjust whether up to 2 tablets at once, 1 tablet and 2 phones, or up to 4 phones.

I can see it being more expensive than a regular outlet, because there's a transformer involved. But 4,300 yen?? Forget it.

They cost 11.99 in The U.S. and have been on sale for 3 years now.
