There’s nothing like a friendly clock. One of the most impressionable features of Richard Sapper’s “Static” clock is its protruding dial, which reaches out to the person trying to read it. Designed a half-century ago, Static has accumulated a lot of hype, including winning the coveted Compasso d’Oro award in 1960.

Simple and elegant, the clock is encompassed in a metal case, and is available in satin with a black or white dial, and gun-metal-grey steel with a white dial only. Fifty years after its debut, Sapper’s masterpiece is finally making its way to Tokyo. Yamagiwa will be the product’s exclusive selling agent from now until September. (Laura Hibbard/Metropolis)

  It is mind boggling to try to undrestand how a simple clock is worth more than some old Japanese cars with engine,doors, clock, radio,cd ,tv,4 wheels etc...all in working order? ha ha

  You have a nice writing style on the whole Laura, but you'd better check the word "impressionable" in a dictionary or thesaurus, where you'd find it alongside words like "innocent", "naive" and "gullible".

  Good to see an analog dial. I wonder how many of the younger generation are able to tell time using it?
