BEIJING —
The International Baseball Federation has slapped a $2,000 fine on Japan’s national baseball team manager Senichi Hoshino for remaining in the bench after being ejected in Wednesday’s game against Cuba at the Beijing Olympics, an IBAF official said Friday. Hoshino was protesting a strike three call on Tomoya Satozaki’s check swing in the game’s ninth inning when the plate umpire signaled him an order to leave the field. But as the manager’s subsequent notice to send a pinch hitter went through, the Japanese side had construed that the ejection order had been canceled.
According to IBAF technical commissioner Koji Aso, the commission confirmed at a meeting late Wednesday that the plate umpire had not invalidated the order and thereby decided to fine Hoshino $1,000. It also added another $1,000 in penalty charge against him for staying in the bench after being sent off, Aso said. An official of the Japanese national team said Friday morning that the IBAF had not formally notified the squad about its decision. Hoshino has been given an ejection order a total of five times in Japanese pro baseball while he served as manager of the Chunichi Dragons in 1987-1991 and 1996-2001 and the Hanshin Tigers in 2002-2003. In Wednesday’s game, Japan lost 4-2 to defending champion Cuba to make a disappointing start in a bid for its first Olympic gold medal in baseball, but notched its first win the following night 6-1 against Taiwan.

GJD: There have been and will always be some bad strike or non-strike calls in baseball; we've seen many so far. In fact, in the same game, some bad calls allowed Japan to walk one or two players when they should have been struck out. If you can't take it, don't watch, I say, and as such Hoshino should hang out in the locker room and wait for the result.

Hoshino is a bully.
His physical attack on a visiting American umpire a few years back as Dragon's manager, would have seen him have a lengthy spell from baseball in any other country. Here the media vitually praised him.

I lost respect for Hoshino the day I saw him punch a Japanese umpire a few years back, and he has done nothing since to change my feelings toward him.

Exactly. A big mouth bully. He is known as the "ribcracker". The push/shove/shouting incident involving MLB's Mike Dimuro comes to mind, but he also punched a Japanese umpire and he got away with it. Players fear him, so a gold medal this time around seems almost assured.

NL: Rubbish. The call was a rubbish call. I watched the game live (not really a fan of Japan) and it was not a strike swing, it was clearly checked in time. Not really a fan of Japan. Um, Really ?

Hoshino should be banned from baseball... and no doubt something similar to the punching and shouting will happen tonight if/when Korea wins.

But this article is not about Hoshino and his previous history, but the poor umpiring decision and the fine handed out after allowing Hoshino to manage after the argument ? We all know about Hoshino's record, but this is about him having every right to argue a poor call in the 9th which saw 3 outs for the Japanese at bat and then fining Hoshino for staying on the bench, despite allowing him to call in the pinch hitter afterwards ? Don't knock Hoshino too much. Here is a man who ran straight to ex-Giant and yakuza-wannabe Kiyohara grabbing Kiyohara by the shirt during a Tigers Kyojin bench clearer a few years ago.

Korea have just gone 4-2 up in the ninth!! You know how to take the loss Hoshino. Here's your sword. Don't get any on my shoes.

5-2!! Catcher doesn't know how to throw to second.

beaten 5-3 by the Koreans. A feeling I can only describe as good as the time I had a 3-way with 2 Japanese hotties a few years back. Only filthy gaijin who have been in Japan for a few years like myself can explain this happiness...

LOL... Northlondon...Hoshino was tossed in front of a worldwide audience. He then went immediately to his
misunderstanding card. But, his ejection, (fair or not), was not rescinded. This was just an attempt by Hoshino(the yak intimidator) to cheat the rules.northlondon at 03:57 PM JST - 18th August
Good to see that cultural ambassadors such as yourself give us non-Japanese such a good image over here. No wonder a lot of Japanese hate the sight of us. Mainly down to sad little people like yourself. Mind you, the two Japanese 'hotties' you had a '3-way' with sound really pure and clean. I'm sure you don't need to worry about STD's or anything..
