I was deeply moved by his singing of the national anthem with his swollen face.

I have to say 48 years is a looong time. Good for him.

Well done. I am surprised - I thought Japan often took home boxing medals. This Shimizu bloke is impressive too - he is a full time member of the Army, so it is amazing how he fits in time to train! Let's hope they both turn pro and go for the big time!

Don't know if the JOC's prediction of more than 15 golds included this man, but I bet they're thanking their lucky stars, and rightly so -- this guy has given the nation yet another gold, and proven that Japan is still up there in the fight. Good on this young man, and congrats to him.

Good show. There are men in this country who can fight and I hope the judoka and wrestlers will take cues from this bloke.

Seriously Boxing? Thought I could get into it, much the same as Judo, but was disappointed and bored (with both). MMA has really made these sports look like slow motion training sessions. Yawn.

If it weren't for judo, wrestling or boxing, then there wouldn't be any MMA in the first place. And there are a lot of us who despise the cable tv money sport of MMA, with no discipline or culture. Those MMA fighters even fight each other in the street and outside of the ring. If a judoka did that in Japan you would end up in court and get thrown out of the sport for good.

This is the end for the computerized scoring system in the Olympics. The Amateur Boxing body plans to return to the traditional 10-point scoring system well before the 2016 Olympics, to be closer to the pros and take into account every aspect of boxers' skills, not solely their ability to land clean punches.
The computerized scoring system is widely criticized for warping the sport into something resembling "fencing with gloves" and de-emphasizing everything from body punches (which don't usually yield many points) to ring control to fighter aggressiveness (a major controversy in this Olympics when boxers ahead in points just grab, stall, and run away to protect their points lead).

That's really a rare happening for Japan. I'm do proud that they have grab their gold in the history of Japan. I'm pretty sure they will gain the next gold for the next Olympic to come.
