Well done Korea. Japan blew it again.

  • 0

    ProudKoreanGuy

Hoshino vowed something like that he would rewrite a page in Japanese baseball history and he did - except completely opposite to what he had in mind. He and his team just may need to extend their visas to stay in Beijing longer, until the Japanese fans cool down from their hopping-mad anger.

He and his team just may need to extend their visas to stay in Beijing longer,

for one more hair-cut? this time maru bozu !

Hoshino's managerial ability is questionable for sure.

  • 0

    ProudKoreanGuy

For a long while, it sure looked like that S. korea would lose to Japan, by 1-2. It really did.

  • 0

    lynny

I think Hoshino is great. If the japanese players had half his passion, they might actually have reached the final.

Congratulations, Korea. In baseball, they are Japan's master.

Well, for Japan and Asia's sake I hope they will win the bronze against either Cuba or USA. But, for Korea's sake, I hope Korea ends up playing against USA for the gold.

Wait won't tough man Hoshino and the best baseball team in the world be hopping back on a plane today? Hoshino said they were only interested in the gold medal.

TBS is conveniently overlooking the loss an hour ago and analysing in minute detail the women's softball team members and how they came to be this great.

The Korean trolls, as predicted, have already started flooding Asian themed websites with their usual racist gloating and filthy comments. Counting down until they start pouring in here by the swarms pretending to be non-Korean foreigners.

If Koreans lose, they riot and scream and issue death threats. When they win, they act like little children gloating and screaming racial superiority.

Koreans are funny and entertaining to watch.

Yes, he did say somthing of that sort, but now since he has paid US$2000 fine, he will try and fight for Bronze Medal.

Match didn't turn out as you would have liked eh, dogbert. I'll now release the Japanese equivalent draft that didn't end up doing the rounds.

GG Sato was very poor indeed. First an error from a simple ground ball that got Korea on base. Then the drop from a straightforward fly with 2 outs. There have been some very poor performances from Japan. GG Sato and Murata have been a waste of two slots.

It's good Japan lost today's game, because now I can see something other than tough man Hoshino and the best baseball players in the world looped and looped again ad infinitum, and instead I can see repeats of repeated footage of yesterday's news.

who is not cluess about this sport like some person who is stuck teaching English in the suburbs of Tokyo.

mindyou, I have been supporting Japan in the baseball but they lost 4 games in total. Not really world champion form now is it ? Korea (who I did not support) are unbeaten. It seems as though you are more clueless than any 'English teacher' about world baseball. And by the way most of us here are not English teachers. I'll teach you anything you need to know about baseball, and I'm English..

I'm not Korean. I'm Chibaman. And I feel your pain over this loss. I wonder if the izakaya will do more or less business tonight than if team wimp Japan won. It's gonna take some serious alcohol to numb this pain. Ouch. Pride smashed with superior Korean baseball bats. Let's here it for South Korea, UNDISPUTABLE WORLD CHAMPIONS OF BASEBALL IN 2008 AND EVERY DAY HEREFORTH.

  • 0

    northlondon

Therefore as the defending world champions of the world it comes as big shock this result.

I guess this no longer makes Japan 'world champions of the world' then. And not really a big shock, seeing as Korea beat Japan in the group game as well.

Kick to the groin ! Japan just got worked. I can't help but wonder which fans are more apt to step in front of a chuo line express, the Americans for seeing their team win the silver, or the Japanese losing to their most hated rival. Gee, thats a tough one ! Congratulations to Korea. Who have now beaten Japan 3 out of 4 games including twice at the WBC. It's safe to say the best ballplayers in Asia are not in Japan. Now lets all sit back and see if the kids representing the USA can provide the shocker of the Olympics and take down Cuba.

A combined 0-4 against the US, Korea and Cuba. Japan........sucks.......donkeyballs!

  • 0

    outhouseout

THe country which wins the Olympics becomes Olympic Champions. Japan winning the WBC is the World Champions. Therefore Japan is still the defending world champions until the next world cup where every country has it's absolute best players.

In soccer/football. Italy is the world champions but Italy is not the olympic champions. It is better to be the world champions than the olympic champions.

You have to be a downtrodden grumpy foreigner with an inferiority complex to not understand this blinded with hate. No rational reasoning just plain old insecurity.

  • 0

    outhouseout

Here is more inferiority complex bordering insanity to state that Korea is the world champions. They are not because this was the semi finals for a start. And if they win the finals then Korea will become Olympic champions.

  • 0

    RomeoRamenII

boobug - it won't be the Americans. Our squad is made up of minor league players.

Put your money on the J-fans to downsize themselves in droves because they were conditioned by this nation's media that Team Hoshino would "mow down" all who played against them.

You shold go and see your doctor. Anger management. Szhizofrenic delusion which leads to inferiority complex and denial. Japan is the world champions in baseball. Korea is not the world champions in baseball because this was the Olympic semi finals. If Korea gets gold. Korea then becomes the Olympic Champions and not World Champions. YOu can argue, mock as much as you want but it will make you look less ignorant and insecure if you could come to terms with history and facts.

  • 0

    northlondon

In soccer/football. Italy is the world champions but Italy is not the olympic champions. It is better to be the world champions than the olympic champions.

The difference being that in the baseball all the world powerhouses (bar the Dominican Republic) entered the Olympics wanting to win gold to prove who is number 1 in the world on current form. To be fair to the US theirs is a minor league Triple A team but Japan entered what is basically an All-Star team. Olympic soccer is totally different to Olympic baseball (as in, it's not taken very seriously except for the nations that are sponsored by Nike).

You have to be a downtrodden grumpy Japanese baseball fan with an inferiority complex blinded by ignorance of world sport not to understand that. Just plain old ignorance and insecurity..

I feel sorry for the Japanese girls. The softball team win gold by beating the best team in the world, but the baseball players get all the attention plus the big salaries. Japanese women definitely wear the trousers in Japan.

So why do Japan's best players leave Japan to play baseball in a country that is not Japan?

Now that we agree that Japan is the world champions in baseball. There was only 1 out of 9 Japanese who played in MLB. Well there was 2. The relief pitcher. The others were not playing in MLB. This means that most of the best players do not leave Japan and that Japan has the best baseball players in the world and that Japan is the world champions in baseball.

Why do Japan's best players leave Japan to play baseball in a country that is not Japan?

  • 0

    chardk1

Wow, weirdest discussion ever. Japan is the reigning WBC champ, but it has never won gold in the Olympics. It also has never won the Baseball World Cup, which has been held since 1938. WBC stands for "World Baseball CLASSIC" not "World Baseball CHAMPIONSHIP" as some people seem to believe, and if you read the MLB baseball site the WBC is described as the world's premier "exhibition tournament." When the people running the show don't call it a legit world championship, it ain't a legit world championship. It's not that complicated.

Clearly, MLB is the premier baseball league in the world. Which is why Olympic baseball is mostly a sham, since most of the best players in the world from around the world are playing in the U.S. If you put that aside and just look at actual results in international competition, it's hard to argue that Cuba is not the best year in and year out. Japan always fields a good team and has a lot of good players, but undisputed world champion? I don't think there is factual or anecdotal evidence to support that assertion.

Ironically, the people who insist that Japanese baseball is the best and that the WBC is proof of that -- the only difference between the WBC and the Baseball World Cup is that the WBC is supported by Major League Baseball. So apparently even though you think America sucks and American baseball sucks, your definition of the only meaningful tournament is one organized by the Americans. How pathetic is that.

    Blue_Tiger

Well-done South Korea! A come-back victory! Could it be that they were motivated by Hoshino's words? At any rate, it was a fun game to watch, especially when Korea piled on two more runs on Wakui, the golden boy from Seibu. Once again, Japan is in the Bronze Medal game, much to the chagrine of the Japanese fans.

  • 0

    chibaman

The Korean dominator that slammed home two runs in the 8th plays for the Yomiuri Giants. I hope everything stays civil in the aftermath.

  • 0

    Blue_Tiger

Is it just me, or is this the third time in two Olympics that a foreigner who happens to play on a JBPL Team shut down the National Japan Team, sending them to the Bronze Medal match (in 04, it was Jeff Williams of Hanshin and the04 Australia Silver Medal Team)? Further, is it also the umpteenth time that the Japan Media has basically glossed over the loss by playing, playing, playing, and playing again a gold medal win in some other area?

A further caveat: if the USA Loses to Cuba, you'd better believe the J-Media will be all over it, cutting apart every mistake the US Team made, and breaking down every weakness, and how Japan will exploit it (somethign they DIDN'T do before the games started, passing over the US Team as non-essential in their schedule....only to lose 4-2 in the Round Robin).

  • 0

    USNinJapan2

    outhouseout

Japan did not have it's best team.

Excuse me? That's your excuse? I just compared the player rosters of 2006 WBC Team Japan and this latest Hoshino Japan Olympic and you know what I found? Aside from the fact that both teams were comprised entirely of 'premier' Central and Pacific League players, TEN of them (i.e. most of the starters) are on both lists. In other words except for the few stars that moved up to the Big Leagues, these two teams are for the most part the same team. In comparison, NONE of the current US Olympic team players participated in the '06 WBC and NONE of them are current MLB players. So to conclude, the best baseball team that Japan can currently field (which includes ten WBC veterans) couldn't beat a bunch of American minor league kids (one's even an actual college student) when they managed to beat an American team loaded with MLB stars just two years ago. If that's not a downward trend I don't know what is.

What's telling is that not even the Japanese media, notorious for spinning defeats/chokes like this one, are relying on your extremely lame excuse that the Japanese have failed to become Olympic champions but that they are still world champions because of the '06 WBC. Good thing for Japan that their media don't share your delusional perspective.

They mumbled something in a 30 second sound-bite, and then after that it was 30 more minutes of yesterday's match again, and it was pretty loud and clear that Japan won that one. So what's the deal? Did this match go ahead today? Was it postponed or something? It's like it never existed.

Alright tough man Hoshino, you might be spared in the tv coverage from the sheer embarrassment and post-overhype-disappointment that transpired today, but the newspapers tomorrow will leave nothing out. Shame, Hoshino, national shame. You promised us gold. Are you breaking that promise? You know how to take responsibility for this. Just don't disrupt public transportation near Chiba. Thanks and regards.

Congrats to Korea for a well deserved win. I was cheering for Japan, but Lee's lads were clearly superior. It was obvious that Hoshino was NOT an inspirational leader. The players were not at their best, he was outmanaged by most other teams.

Having said that, what the Olympics shows is that many countries can field a very competitive all star team. The best of Korea is clearly at least equal to the best of Japan. However, in terms of depth of talent, Japan is still ahead. That is why Japan cherry picks many players from Korea (and Taiwan for that matter) to play in Nippon Pro Baseball. The reverse cannot be said. It is similar to the Major Leagues cherry picking the best Japanese players (and others from around the world) for MLB. And conversely, mediocre and/or career minor league MLB players can come to Japan or Korea and be stars.

Hehehe... sorry, but I was cheering for Korea 100%!! When Japan was winning, it was all over the media, and I could check the score on my keitai IMMEDIALY upon hitting the built-in Yahoo.jp button. Then, suddenly, it was gone.... had to click on sports, then baseball, then yahoo sports again, then baseball, then olympics, then finally 'Hoshino Japan vs. Korea' and found that Japan had gone up 4 runs!

Way to go Korea!!! I would say tough luck, Japan, but you deserved outright to lose. When I finally saw some news replay, and I admit I'm glad they had the heart to broadcast it when I thought they wouldn't, I did feel pretty sorry for the players; but then when Hoshino was being interviewed and said, literally, "Two lose by only two points is a shame" as though it was from the loss the other day, I lost all sympathy for the team. Hoshino didn't even notice the final score.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure they'll lose again tomorrow, too, and be in fourth overall. Most people will simply ignore it and pretend the olympics and baseball didn't exist together, but the truth remains, KOREA IS UNBEATABLE! If they don't get the gold tomorrow, it's a crime.

Japan could not shut down Korea, even with its best relievers on the mound like Fujikawa and Iwase. No excuses. Korea was the better team. They beat Japan not once, but twice. Congratulations, Korea!

This Olympic baseball competition also demonstrates unequivocally the weakness of Japanese batters.

The Japanese have sent NPB top-level teams to both the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, with only a bronze medal to show for it in Sydney, and a 3rd or 4th place finish in Beijing. Pathetic.

If they lose to the U.S. in the bronze medal game, it will be a national humiliation. Considering the weakness of the Japanese lineup-even against U.S. minor leaguers-it is distinct possibility.

Good luck to the U.S. Get the bronze medal!

Outhouse: "The reason why Matsuzaka, Godzilla, Ichiro were not allwed to play is because if US gave their best MLB players most of the Americans would be caught with steroids."

Ummm... so you're fully admitting that the Japanese players you mention above are drug users.

"Why did you come to Japan in the first place... is your life so miserable?"

So... let me get this straight, mindyo-- err... outhouse -- you're saying your life has to suck to come to Japan.... hmmmm... that's not one you want to put on the commercials!

One more thing, outhouse, if Japan were truly the world champions, they would have won... plain and simple. In the first ever baseball classic (as opposed to one-hundred years of Olympics for which they never won gold EVER) they lost to Korea twice before, by luck of the US losing, they got to play one more game and won through luck again. Here they lost, and lost badly! They had their major league's BEST players, and lost.... not only against Korea (twice! haha!), but against minor league US players.

They are not the world's champions by any means, my friend. They are the world's fourth place champions as best. The baseball classic, which has only a few countries, means nothing. When Japan loses in the next baseball classic, just for proof (and the system has been improved so that they can't lose three times and still win the competition!), you'll finally see the light.

Good job Korea. You are truly the world champions! I look forward to the game results tomorrow (they won't broadcast it here, I'm sure).

I have really heard a lot of strange, fact-challenged statements from a number of Japanese the past few days. The story seems to be developing that the U.S. has done poorly at these Olympics because its gold medal total is behind that of China.

Of course China deserves great credit for its accomplishments leading into the final days of this Olympiad.

But I cannot help but think that the Japanese media is doing this misleading story binge to draw attention away from the facts. The facts show that Japan is having a poor Olympics itself in relation to Athens. In 2004, Japan won 37 medals, including 16 golds. Right now, in 2008, Japan has only 24 medals, garnering 9 golds, and with a reasonable expectation of only a few more medals. Talk about a significant dropoff.

In contrast, even with the bungling of the U.S. 4X100 relay teams, the U.S. has won 101 medals in China, including 30 golds, and reasonable prospects of at least a few more. The U.S. won 102 medals in 2004, with 36 golds. The U.S. performance overall has been excellent again these Olympic Games.

Japan should pay more attention to its own shortcomings, instead of spewing garbage about the U.S. that is simply not true.

Maybe Japan can get lucky and win the bronze in baseball tomorrow.

But the U.S. will easily surpass its overall medal total from Athens, and near or pass its gold medal total, too. Another great effort, U.S.!

They will show anything BUT Japanese footage of losses in an attempt to circumvent the truth of the fact that they are sore losers. Instead of being proud of their accomplishments, they're embarrassed by their losses. It's hard to blame them... the media hyped 'Hoshino Japan', etc., so much that it's really really got to be hard to swallow things. Seems you like the broken-record trick yourself. I'm just going to repost what I already posted to you on a different thread where you said the exact same thing you said above...

If gold medals are all that matter why do they have silver and bronze medals at all? Do you feel that the nations (most of them) that have won many medals but no gold medals shouldn't take pride in their athletes' achievements?

Speaking of jealousy, how many medals has your country won? Did it even manage any double digits? Why don't YOU go calculate the difference in medals (any color) between your country and the USA. Then get back to me.

TV stations can't criticize Hoshino because they had been flattering him. Hoshino appeared on talk shows and TV ads that have no relationship with baseball very often. And he had talked about morals arrogantly, and sometimes about politics. He was not director of baseball but TV personality. For TV stations, to criticize Hoshino means self-abnegation.

  • 0

    pathat

I disagree with people who try to diminish the importance of silver and bronze medals. The U.S. has been remarkably consistent with its medal totals in the past 6 Olympics-counting ones in which all countries participated-and taking into account the huge difference in medal events prior to the 1980s. The accomplishments of the Americans time and again show the outstanding depth of the American Olympic squads and varied talents of the American athletes.

With the Americans assured of two medals in basketball, the American men and women playing the volleyball title matches, and the U.S. minor leaguers playing Japan for bronze in baseball, the U.S. is going to challenge its highest overall medal total-minus 1984 LA-of 108 from Barcelona in 1992. The U.S. still has a chance of equalling or exceeding its 36 golds from Athens.

Back on topic: I am curious to see the reception Lee Seung-Yeop gets when he returns to the Giants. He was not exactly on good terms with the organization this year, and I wonder if they will want him around next year.

I hope Korea wins the gold over Cuba.

it's Olympics tradition that the rank of the whole game is according to the medal count of the GOLD! That including the game of 1984 LA olympics and 1996 Atlanta olympics and all other 27 Olympics games. Let the truth speak!

  • 0

    yosun

Olympic medal rankings From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The whole idea of ranking a country by medal count has always been a controversial issue in determining top ranking.[1] Most of the world's media ranks in the 'gold first' manner, with the number of golds determining rank, then number of silvers, then the number of bronzes. The US media has for many years generally ranked countries in an 'overall total' manner, with all medals being added up and a ranking based on which country has the most[2]. Some individuals promote a systematic ranking based upon a point system with the greater points awarded to a gold medal.

The IOC is not allowed to produce an official ranking by the terms of the Olympic charter. It has taken the approach of releasing 'information' based on the 'gold first' standard, but the medal tables provided on its website carry this disclaimer:

“ The International Olympic Committee (IOC) does not recognise global ranking per country; the medal tables are displayed for information only. Furthermore, the results that we publish are official and are taken from the "Official Report" - a document published for each Olympic Games by the Organising Committee. However, for the first Olympic Games (until Antwerp in 1920), it is difficult to give the exact number of medals awarded to some countries, due to the fact that teams were composed of athletes from different countries. The medal tables by country are based on the number of medals won, with gold medals taking priority over silver and bronze. A team victory counts as one medal. ” —International Olympic Committee

Hoshino has done a poor job-very true.

But the players MUST be blamed for their inability to hit the baseball. This is not something that Hoshino can do for them. We are not talking about a HS team. We are talking about many of the top NPB players, and they cannot do anything at the plate. The weakness of the Japanese batters is their fault, not that of Hoshino.

Additionally, many Japanese think that Fujikawa and Iwase are two of the best relievers around-including MLB. They could not shut down Korea, either.

Japan screwed up all around. The team is not as talented as many Japanese want to believe. Japan got only bronze in 2004, was lucky to get through the WBC after losses to Korea and the "disputed" one to the U.S., and has lost 4 games already in these Olympics.

I have watched Japanese pro baseball since the early 1990s, and I think the overall of Japanese baseball is getting worse-notwithstanding the individual talents of Ichiro and Matsuzaka and a few other Japanese MLBers. I think many Japanese baseball fans tend to misunderstand this, and that they also overestimate the importance of the WBC title.

Perhaps in its headlong, half-century rush to upstage the Americans in a baseball competition or two, the Japanese forgot to take into account that not only could they improve at the game of baseball, but that other countries could equal them, or surpass them, in baseball skill.

  • 0

    smithinjapan

"No, actually I was simply pointing out that by adding the unnecessary "u" to your spelling that you are clearly indentifying yourself as a non-American. So why should we Americans care what you think about our sports programs ? Get it ? Maybe not. As this ongoing tirade exhibits,"

You're whole point was that you'd side with the IOC over someone who spells colour with an 'extra u'. Now, tell me, how many in the IOC, member-wise, do NOT use a 'u' in the spelling of colour?? Come on, lad! You made it clear that you were trying to undermine my opinion by saying I am non-American... so tell me how many on the IOC, whom you strongly agree with over me based on spelling, are American!

  • 0

    smithinjapan

Pathat: FINALLY! back to the game, and not a thread about the idiotic concept that the number of medals matters more than the colour. I mean, if the actual number mattered more, Japan and the US should have just folded in baseball and gone for a bronze medal match.... or wait.... maybe that's what they've done. Hell, then, Japan should be more than happy to lose to Korea and go for bronze... it's the exact same thing, after all.

Anyway, I agree with you, 100%! It's not just Hoshino, but ALL the players. Mindyou-become-Outhouse stated that perfectly well, though unintentionally, by stating every game how much the losing pitchers were awful, but how great the next ones would be... but when they lost, how much they were to blame, but how great the next ones would be, ad nauseum. It wasn't the pitchers, wasn't the players, wasn't the coach, it was ALL OF THEM that sucked as a unit, when they should have worked better together, and the Korean team showed how well they CAN do it. A few of the Japanese team do very well on their own, but clearly as a team they cannot muster the skill to beat even part-time players from other countries.

I think the U.S. should be proud of the fact that it will win the overall medal total, and equal/surpass not only its gold total of 2004, but very probably top its best ever Olympics medal total of 108 in Barcelona.

At the same time, China has done a great job with these Olympics. They deserve all the compliments they have gotten for everything connected with the Games-from the organization down to each and every competition.

China will win the gold medal total. Congratulations. The U.S. will win the overall total. Congratulations. Japan will have a smaller medal haul than at Athens. Too bad, so sad.

A few of the Japanese team do very well on their own, but clearly as a team they cannot muster the skill to beat even part-time players from other countries.

That smacks clearly against what the Japanese are always known and admired for by Koreans - excellent teamwork. Koreans are usually the ones known to work better indivdually but poorly as a unit - at least compared to the Japanese. Anyway, you can be sure that, up until the 8th inning, there were whole lot of Koreans screaming to pull Lee Seung-Yeop out of the game and I was one who felt the same way. But, the SK manager Kim's stubborn faith in him paid off, luckily for the SK team. Otherwise, he would've been THE GOAT, if SK lost. On the other hand, in a postgame interview with Korean media, Hoshino was asked why did not leave Iwase in the game to continue pitching, after Lee's homerun, but whether doing so would have been the solution for Japan is a moot point, now, and we would never know how that decision could have affected the outcome. One more thing, SK should not count on another come-from-behind win against Cuba, this time, because if it falls behind in scoring by more than two points early in the final, its chance to win the gold will be from slim to none, imo.

No need to apologize. We are all allowed our opinions here.

You say the "media incited people." This is exactly what many of us on JT are complaining about. We listened to this Hoshino Japan crap this year and got sick of it.

"Hoshino appeared on TV again and again...."

Yes, he belongs in the TV booth only. He had been out of the game of baseball for a few years now, but the Japan Baseball people foolishly chose him to manage the team in Beijing, and this decision was based too much on his popularity in years past in NPB.

Burikko: What many Japanese need to understand is that the Japanese team is simply not that good. They have talent, to be sure-especially a few individuals-but they are not more talented overall than some other teams in the competition, which speaks volumes about the declining level of play in NPB.

The Japanese have exaggerated the lucky victory in the WBC into this ludicrous belief that they should triumph in international competitions like the 2008 Olympics. Criticize Hoshino all you want-he deserves it-but you need to also blame the players for such poor performances.

Perhaps after losing so many games in international competitions from 2000 to Australia, the U.S., Korea, and Cuba(and without the talented Dominican Republic in most of the competitions), the Japanese will finally realize that they are just one of many countries in the world trying to be the best at baseball, and the track record this decade-even with the WBC title figured in-is not all that impressive.
