BEIJING —
Japan’s Ai Sugiyama and Ayumi Morita eased past Hungarian pair Agnes Szavay and Greta Arn 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the women’s doubles at the Beijing Olympic Games on Wednesday.
Sugiyama and Morita were in total control from the outset and sent the Hungarians packing in 85 minutes at Olympic Green Tennis Center, setting up a second-round meeting with No. 2 seeds Venus and Serena Williams. ‘‘We were able to get our rhythm from the beginning and this win gave us momentum ahead of the meeting with the Williams sisters. I think we’ll have a chance to beat them,’’ Sugiyama said. Sugiyama and Morita have both already been eliminated from the singles.
