Terauchi 11th in springboard final at Beijing

BEIJING —

Japan’s Ken Terauchi struggled to an 11th-place finish in the men’s 3-meter springboard final as host China tightened its stranglehold on the diving competition at the Beijing Games on Tuesday. Terauchi was never in medal contention and could only muster a total of 442.50 points, while current world No. 1 He Chong nailed top honors to give China its sixth diving gold in as many events at the National Aquatics Center. He amassed 572.90 points for the gold, Canada’s Alexandre Despatie took silver for the second Games in a row with 536.65 and Chinese world champion Qin Kai won bronze with 530.10.

Terauchi, the 2001 world bronze medalist, dropped into 11th from seventh after a shaky fourth dive and was unable to recover and move back up the 12-man rankings. ‘‘I tried to be aggressive but lost,’’ said Terauchi. ‘‘Of course I am disappointed about the result but I am still proud and happy to be here.’’
