Ueno books berth in semis, on full throttle for gold

BEIJING —

Defending champion Masae Ueno got off to a flying start Wednesday, winning all three of her matches by ippon to reach the semifinals of the women’s 70-kilogram category at the Beijing Olympic Games. Ueno picked off her opponents like flies, deploying two submission holds and a throwing technique.

Ueno won her first match against South Korea’s Park Ka Yeon in dominant fashion with a rear submission hold for ippon after scoring a point for an outer-leg trip at Beijing Science and Technology University Gymnasium. The Athens Olympic champion later scored an ippon with an inner-thigh sweep of China’s Wang Juan with 58 seconds left and finished off Hungary’s Anett Meszaros next with an inner-leg trip before placing her in a lengthwise submission just 1:04 into the match, setting up a meeting with Edith Bosch of the Netherlands in the semifinals.

Interesting that they don't mention the sport - guess they assume we all know it is Judo. Good to see the Japanese girls winning by ippon after Tani's poor showing

Gold but you would not have thought it - would it have hurt to smile? The bronze medal ladies looked more chuffed with their gongs that she did!
