Men who use trains on dates: Please stay single

Men who use trains on dates: Please stay single

TOKYO —

A little while ago, RocketNews24 posted a column on its Japanese site by a writer claiming to be a total “it girl“, the epitome of female sex appeal. The article received quite a bit of attention, prompting some internet viewers to respond with indignation, both feigned and genuine. Yes, it’s a bit naughty, and taken at face value, I guess the article could upset some readers, since it reads like … well, a column written by Carrie Bradshaw’s evil Japanese twin.

The viewers’ response notwithstanding, we thought the article was funny, and we’ve translated it below for your amusement.

Column: The “It Girl” Speaks: Men Who Use Trains on Dates: Please Just Abandon the Idea of Marriage and Stay Single Forever

Okay, all of you guys out there, if you think it’s perfectly acceptable to use trains on a date, you have no business dating at all. In fact, it’s utterly ridiculous for you to think you even have the right to lust after girls. I just hope all of you have the decency to stay single your entire lives. Oh, and in case you’re wondering, it’s not just me who feel this way; most girls do. They’re just too nice to say so to your face.

The only reason why we don’t simply refuse to take the train on a date is because we know that it would be a total turn-off. I mean, even if having to take the train is absolutely infuriating and makes us want to take off one of our boots and bash your face in and break your nose with it, that would definitely ruin the mood, wouldn’t it? So we don’t resort to such behavior, no matter how much we want to.

But that doesn’t change the fact that forcing a girl to take the train on a date is practically abuse. Yes, it’s a form of violence. Sad, how many idiotic men there are out there who don’t realize this and are only interested in relieving their sexual needs. All they can think about is getting into our pants and spending as little money as possible in the process.

Guys going on dates basically have one goal in mind — to get into bed with girls. Sure, whenever someone writes something like that, there are always guys who tweet a lame response like “But that’s not true!” Well, those guys are lying and just trying to sound nice, so girls really shouldn’t believe them. Guys like that are usually the ones most eager to put their hands under your shirt, just wait and see. And if you let them, mark my words, they’ll waste no time trying to get further with you! Yup, they can sound all nice and sincere on Twitter, but that’s what they’re really after, the pitiful creatures.

Oh, and guys, don’t believe it for a second when a girl tweets that she doesn’t mind taking the train on a date. She’s only saying that because she’s expected to and wants to sound like a good little girl. It’s just the result of social conditioning, simply a survival technique in a society where you’re expected to be kind and broad-minded, at least publicly.

Regardless of what a girl says, a guy who takes a girl out on a date on a train is simply not boyfriend material. Some nerve these guys have, trying to satisfy their needs using our bodies and being cheapskates about it! We girls may be too shy to say so, but we really are embarrassed about having to take the train while on a date. Yes, we’re embarrassed and sad (crying inside, really) that we’re being taken on a cheap date.

It only makes things worse when guys actually think they’re doing us a big favor by buying us the train tickets! It actually makes me sick, these guys acting like they’re giving us the moon, when in fact it’s just a 210 yen ticket; it just pisses me off so much! I wish they would go into self-imposed exile in a jungle somewhere and never return to civilization.

Really, what is wrong with these guys? Be a man and take a taxi or your own car! Oh, and if it’s your car, make sure it’s nice and roomy, not one of those puny little mini-cars. And just to be clear, cars definitely don’t include public buses — no way are we going anywhere on a bus on a date. I mean, just the thought of a bus date is enough to shock a girl into menopause!

Yup, taking the train or bus on a date has got to be a joke. Ha, ha, very funny, I’m in stitches! Actually, no, it’s not funny at all. Guys who use trains on dates definitely shouldn’t be laughing, and it’s no laughing matter for us girls either. Please, if you’re one of these guys with neither money nor manners, just stay single and don’t try to get married, you’ll be doing us all a favor that way.

Seriously, such guys shouldn’t even be allowed to touch girls, much less marry. Yes, more single men means more girls will be single too, but that’s not much of a problem for us. We can just fantasize about hot actors or pop idols to take care of our sexual needs, so we don’t really need men in our lives, do we?

And if we want children, we’re more than ready to procure the “seeds” from some good-looking male individual out there. Once we have that taken care of, all we need in addition is money and social status. Yes, money and social status are the crucial factors here. Naturally, being able to spend money and show the rest of the world what a great life you have is of extreme importance to girls. Now, that wouldn’t be possible with guys who can’t even afford to spare girls the humiliation of public transport, would it? No, I didn’t think so!

Guys, if you have plans for a date, it’s not too late, please use a taxi or get your own car. Come on, do you really think you can get your hands under our shirts if you’re going to make us take the train on a date? If you’re that desperate to go on a date, you should take a train to a farm out in the country and maybe go milk some cows. And if that’s still not good enough, you can go screw the cows’ teats to your hearts’ content. Just leave us alone and we’ll thank you for not pissing us off any further! End Column

So, guys, what do you think? The whole piece is obviously a joke, right? Admittedly, some of the more explicit expressions have been slightly toned down in the translation (for the sake of decency), but I was still surprised at the number of viewers (not all by any means, but a good number) who reacted with seemingly genuine anger or revulsion to the article, criticizing the writer for being “a selfish and superficial bitch” who can see men only as walking wallets. Some people even commented that taking the train was actually easier in any of the large Japanese cities than driving the often congested roads. All of that being said, just how much truth is in the column, we’ll leave up to your imagination and good judgment…

I think whoever wrote that column is precisely what's wrong with a lot of Japanese women: too materialistic and above themselves. They see men as nothing but a wallet to feed them and buy them gifts. If you really like the guy, what does it matter if you take a train, or at least meet near or at your date spot?

Most of these women end up being single all their lives, because they can't find a sugar daddy "worthy" of mooching off of, or wind up marrying a complete a-hole who also cares about nothing but money.

Most young guys aren't rich and drive nice cars (especially in Japan) If they are rich and drive nice cars, then they are most likely in a fishy line of work, or still live with their parents and/ or have rich parents that spoil them (none of the qualities I would find appealing).

IMO, young men shouldn't be looked at for what they are or what they do now, but what they will be. A good woman's is to give support to a man's potential to succeed and make sure that he does succeed. That way they can share the future success and rewards together, rather than having a gold digger husband or wife.

Guys, if you have plans for a date, it’s not too late, please use a taxi or get your own car.

To this I say, what don't you get a fricken job and stop relying on guys to pay your way through life!

You guys obviously don't get it. This is a marketing ploy. I read it in Japanese and it was clearly written by a middle aged man trying his best to sound like a young Japanese lady in her 20s by using lots of LOLs and "ne" at the end of sentences. Much has been made of young men in Japan not buying cars these days. This article has gotten a lot of comments and has been retweeted many times. Pretty clever if you ask me.

The current major problem in Japan is domestic violence that ends up killing their own little ones for self-satisfaction. Or maybe they are too busy fantasizing about hot actors or pop idols to take care of our sexual needs. And that is because of young girls like theses exist who grows up to become women and create social problems. Life isn’t a Disney movie, where the prince charm comes and rescues the girl. Wake up!!!!! It is the 21st century. Learn to appreciate of what you have rather than complaining of what you don’t have. Bottom line, this is a nuisance article.

I agree with the writer. men act like they're good enough to get into my pants, but it's so laughable. you've gotta have a nice car, a nice house, a good job, a full head of hair, a nice body and good clothes. otherwise please just stick to your hentai anime and your computer and stop bothering me. I've had good luck in this department (only ever dated men with net worths in the millions) but I hope other girls who are beautiful and successful will have standards like mine and the writer here.

  • 3

    Onniyama

Not take the train in Japan?! Right. It is a way of life here. Girls that think like this are not worth your time gents.

  • 5

    tkoind2

Vacuous, fluffy, shallow, materialistic, brainless women who judge the quality of other human beings by such standards should be avoided by any intelligent man.

A "Real Catch" would judge a potential partner by the quality of his or her character. By kindness, sensitivity, compassion, fidelity, intelligence, creativity, honesty and the strengths that make a good partner.

Material goods, the nice car, the house, the "ideal" job, the full head of hair, good clothes mean nothing if the person possessing them is shallow, insensitive, unreliable and lacking in fidelity and moral strength.

So lachtamber and others who think that happiness comes with a man meeting your shallow and materialistic checklist, good luck to you. Because it is relationships built on these empty objects that end in lives of misery.

My parents, my wife's partents and my wife and I fail these silly checklists. I have a good job, but not so much hair. I don't have piles of money, but I have enough. I don't drive because I want to help the environment. I don't dress in pricey clothes because I can look good in what I like to wear. And we all take the train. But guess what bunnies.... we are happy. Our relationships are built upon love, friendship, trust, fidelity and a strong desire to work hard to make ourselves happy every day and to cherish each other and not what we own.

I hate to give a woman the impression that I'm spending money on her just to get in her pants. For that reason, I always insist she pays for dinner and the taxi fare. So far as the author of this article, what can I say? Some guys are masochists.

    smithinjapan

Yeah, I think "selfish and superficial bitch" scratches the surface of this woman's character. But only the surface -- she's got a whole lot more problems down below. One thing's for sure -- so long as her attitude is what it is she will be miserable her whole life, and blame it on everyone else but herself.

  • 4

    electric2004

Th writer forgot that there are special romantic train cars, where two seats are designed that a couple can sit more closely to each other.

In other words, train cars, made and advertised for romantic dates.

So basically she regards herself as the decoration next to the driver seat.

  • 1

  • 6

    tkoind2

The sad thing is I have met this type of girl so many times in Tokyo. And I work with a lot of lonely 35+yr old women who are still waiting for these conditions to come true.

One example is a lady who is a very nervous stressed out OL by day and lonely girl at home watching TV and drinking by night. Off work she is charming, funny, interesting and kind. But her thinking is seriously broken. She is waiting for the guy with the car, house, Rolex, 1,000,000 per month salary and high job title. But at over 35 her chances of finding this guy are equal to her chances of waking up queen of Japan.

As a friend I have said as much to her. "Why don't you find a nice guy who can make you happy?" "Just a normal guy you and enjoy your life with." But to her this is failure. She is really holding out for the dream.

I expect her to join the late 40's and 50's single office ladies in the future. Bitter, unhappy and taking it out on everyone around them.

Sad. Japan needs to wake up and give up all this materialistic nonsense. Life is not stuff. You can't take it with you! It doesn't make you happy! And it doesn't make you special! Grow up!

It's true enough that the best love hotels are not within easy reach of the train station, but neither are the cheapest supermarkets and best outlet shops either. Viral campaigns for the Toyota 86 have been going around for a while now. Many build on the Nobita-Suneo-Shizuka love triangle theme of the Jean Reno "Doraemon" ads. Message is simple: you want to get the girl of your dreams? Get a car! (Preferably a new, reasonably priced Toyota coupe...) Personally, I love them, and quite liked the article above. But then, I would never dream of going on a date by train.

Reading the Japanese original gives me faith in the Japanese public, because the Facebook commenters below the story see this article for what it is: a disgusting piece of viral marketing that tries to ensnare readers by pretending ("most girls [think like this]") that this kind of attitude is something other than that of a tiny self-centered minority. Almost assuredly written by someone from the Bubble Era; could be someone of either sex, but probably in their 40s or 50s. Seriously? Taking a train is "violence"? That's not even true if you're an automobile manufacturer desperate to ensnare another generation of people into buying one of your white elephants.

I think a train ride can be rather romantic...although I have never gone on a date like that, but to be fair, if I'm tired, I would not go out without a car and a chauffeur, not even a Michelin2 restaurant invitation will move me. I can cook, the guy can have dinner chez moi...I don't understand why the two genders have to be at war? Every problem has a solution if you want to and we can live in harmony:) World peace.

  • 4

    Leonard Carlson

    Ridiculous!

You ever try to drive around Tokyo on a Sunday afternoon/evening? What takes 2 hours on the train could possibly take 5 hours because of traffic. I drive a fairly nice car and I hate putting stop-and-go miles on it and risking the chance for a wreck.

If going to Hakone, beach, something like that = car

If around the local area = car

If you plan on drinking = train

If during rush hour = train

Nothing wrong with planning to meet somewhere for a date. You get there your way and she gets there her way.

You can also make public transportation somewhat romantic/interesting. Take the Subway to see the Skytree. When finished take the waterboat from Asakua to Odaiba. Enjoy walking around, shopping, nice meal, lights and sights of the bay. After take the monorail across Rainbow Bridge. Almost any girl would enjoy doing that. Especially during the Holiday Season...

Here is a little hint: Any man dating you, has absolutely no intention of marrying...

I know you cannot understand why I am saying this.... just trust me on this.

  • 1

    flygirl1221

I'm gonna play devil's advocate here: if this article was actually written by a woman who is as "it" as she claims, then she will have no problems finding someone to spend obscene amounts of money on her and take her on dates in a fancy car. If she's into older men, then she is probably beating them off with a stick as we speak. Don't hate the player, hate the game. The game being how Japanese men objectify (beautiful) women and how women cope with it by objectifying (rich) men.

    Guza!

This chick that wrote it almost sounds sexist or is on the path of lesbianism, not sure yet lol. But using the train to travel a long distance, say you were on the outskirts of tokyo and wanted to take a girl out to the Tokyo Tower because shes never been wouldnt you wana take a train there? especially if you dont have a car or pay that much for a taxi? Anycase i dont see anything wrong with taking a train less theres a bunch of pervy otaku on the train and shes wearing a skirt anyways im pretty sure yall catch my drift.

Forgive her , and just carry her on your back for a date.

What I think she is saying is that she would rather you just come over to her house and save the bother of the train ride to the local love hotel district.

Seems like the writer here enjoys throwing folks under the bus or train for that matter!

This girl is clearly the type that would marry for money not love. Typical lazy girl that wants to lounge around in departments stores and cafes while her husband is stuck with 14 hour work days ....... 6 days a week. Been living here 30 years. If I had 1yen for every girl I met like her, I'd be rich!

All beauty has a shelf life. Look for a haggard old obachan single and on the train 40 years down the line.

I'm sorry, why is Japan Today giving this gold digger attention?

This girl obviously is living on another planet!! Japanese guys dont have to date. They can take a train to a soapland or the nearest love hotel and call up a prostitue. This has been a long tradition here in Japan, so much so that is all but invisible. So who needs a high maintainance gal like this one when they can pay to get all their needs met in a one stop shop. The birth rate has suffered though.

Advice to Jguys. Find this girl's phone number, borrow a car or pay for a taxi ride around the block and have some fun. Then when you're ready to settle down, find yourself a nice sensible girl who likes trains and live happily every after.

Why somehow I feel this article was written by a guy?

Seems this person only has social contact through twitter.

    That's quite depressing really.

We can assume that the writer is a single middle-age lady who satisfies her own sexual appetite and longs for someone to match her needs. She must have had bad experience with a guy on the train causing humiliation and self-pity.

Gold Digger!!!......... Her attitude is abhorrible!......If you like the person your with what does it matter? Walk, run, ride a bike, train or car...I know men like she describes, they get date's but are not married or will ever be....saving their money is more important to them than a gold digging wench, who is vain and shallow. Life is crazy, she might find her true love on a train, now that she is commited to belittling men. She will never know true love....Some of these type of women or gorgeous on the outside and very ugly on the inside....no train ride for her!!! ........ I feel very sad for this girl...

If this was really written by a woman, then I imagine that she will be one of those women I see buying baby clothes for her dog or pampering her cat, because no man will want to spend any time with her with an attitude like that. I wonder what she is brining to the dating table in regards to a car. Does she drive and if so is it not just some small car but a nice sized car that is clean.

If this was a real woman, I would imagine that she probably lives at home with her parents, and can't cook and can't do any basic household chores, but probably has watched every episode of "Sex and the City."

Men who use trains for other things are best avoided.

If your man actually uses a train for an innocent date, this could be a sign that he is the man to go for. Sounds like the woman's got her thinking scrambled.

If a woman really loves you, she wont care about trains, buses, heck she will run behind you on your TRI CYCLE, or even a bicycle! So if you do not have a Ferrari, and a woman does not follow you around IT IS NOT TRUE LOVE!!

Sex In The City is NOT the instruction guide for women. It's Entertainment nothing more nothing less.

I would purposely pick this woman up in a cigarette smell old Toyota with garbage in the seats and a used condom on the passenger side floor. Japanese women please stop watching," Sex In The City " religiously. IT'S NOT REAL. The show is fake !!!! Don't take it word for word and imagine all american women are like that. Selfish materialistic annoying women. It's not true...... On the t.v. show the woman is ugly skinny with a big witch nose. She's boring and talks highly about herself all the time. WHO would go out with the Bradshaw character !!! The girl is fugly.
