Putin is so popular he has to rig elections and jail opposition leaders. He is a coward, a crook and a scoundrel.

Of course he is going to ignore them. Much like to US would ignore russia if it and Mexico got into a spat over (say) New Mexico. sure, Putin is an autocrat (which is basically what russia has had as a form of government for most of its history) but to expect him to cave in over Ukraine is just dumb. NATO et al should just drop this one.

You've got to punch a bully in the nose or they just keep acting like an azz. I'm normally fairly passive, but I wouldn't be against putting him in his place.

It may be the "in thing" to show your disgust/dislike of Putin but I think you have to admire him. He worked out want he wanted to do and skillfully executed his plan all the while making the west look toothless. Russians like a strongman in charge and Putin has come up trumps. Can't sniff at an 80% approval rating. I rather think that the west's indignation is more to do with how awfully bad their sponsored coup has turned out.

Russia has a very bright future selling discounted raw materials to Asia and arms to the Middle East and Africa. Its people will be happy to live in the shadow of oligarchs grown rich plundering the country's vast resources and somewhat outdated technology. Who knows, at some point, Russia may be invited to rejoin the Western financial/banking system and even to be an observer at a G7 meeting.

Biden urged Moscow to encourage the pro-Russia forces to stand down and “address their grievances politically.”

how ridiculous. given that he supports a government that came to power thru street protests.

Putin is in him samr trap of nationalism that gave him power. If he leave prorussians he will lose power, He he support prorussians he will pull Russia at war that can not be little and fast like in Georgia. I not see alternative solutions, or war and end of career or no war and however end of career. Its the same ideological trap that pulled Hitler to be aggressive to feed nationalism basis of him regime.

Sure looks like he misses the bad ol' Cold War days. Russia is flush to a degree with oil and gas income, but the society is still imploding. The end game for Russia is not going to be happy, but it still has the power to *&%k-up the rest of the world for a couple more decades.

If war blow out and Russia lose war vs Ukraine, Russia will have enough tears for last chance to became a normal country.
