Reaction time is so important a component in a short sprint that I've often thought that they should start the clock the moment each athlete's body leaves the starting block. Either that or have a clock that ticks down, in hundreds of seconds, to the exact moment that the gun will go off so that the athletes can better time their start.

In most other distances, a reaction time of 0.1-0.2 seconds is negligible; in the 100 meters, it's the difference between a medal and nothing.

This is not an Olympic event or anything like that ... but having a nasty dog snarling at my backside does make me move rather quickly. Under such circumstances, I might be able to outrun even Bolt. Perhaps you, too, might be moving just as fast ... or faster ...
