To me, the TPP looks like a complete corporate power grab at the expense of public interests. Me no like!

The U.S will flood Japan with long grain rice nobody in Japan uses, they don't even understand the market, the farmers and industry in Japan will be destroyed, in 10 years you will see their will be no market other then the automotive market left.

I just can't shake this feeling that no meaningful changes will be seen here. Amakudari, keiretsu, old boys' club & associated cronies, the Yaks - I just can't see anything happening in Japan...

Job creator for southeast Asian slaves.

Neither creator or destroyer, but exporter of jobs.

But the trouble with these "free trade" agreements is that they only make the movement of goods and capital freer. Richer countries don't want poorer people crossing their borders, so let's not kid ourselves it's about free trade in all economic resources.

Conversely, once a 50 year old white collar worker has their job exported to a call centre in India it is not easy for them to "move onto more efficient tasks and higher productivity." In reality, after a stint on welfare they are likely to re-enter the workforce on lower pay and so contribute less in taxes.

Companies win. Society/Labour in developed economies lose.

In my case, free trade would be a job creator. As an exporter, my main markets are those places where tariffs and taxes are low. Southern European countries charge combined tariffs of 30% and up, central and south American countries charge 50% and up. Nothing I sell is made in these countries, so I am threatening no one's jobs. On the other hand, if these taxes were lifted, people would buy more, which means I would have to buy more, and those I buy from would have to produce more.

On the other hand, uf goods coming in to Japan were cheaper, I would have mre money to spend on other things, and the people who make and sell those things would do better, and be able to create jobs.

Tariffs are not about protecting consumers or industries, they are tools used by politicians to buy campaign contributions and votes.
