Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama offers a prayer during a Buddhist ceremony Friday for the victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami at Gokokuji temple in Tokyo. Friday marked the 49th day since the disaster. According to Buddhist tradition, the dead wander near their homes for 49 days before heading into their next stage of existence on the 50th day.

The old Llama bloke is here - did Richard Gere and all the Hollywood "buddhists" join in? Anyway, if this sermon comforts some of the flock here, good on him.

Where does the caption say anything about a "sermon," BurakuminDes? Your comment and dig at Richard Gere show nothing more than your own shallowness.

shijukunichi......I think thanks should be given to the Dalai Lama for coming here and offering the traditional prayers for the dead.

I have gone through the 7. 14, 21, 28,35, 42, 49th day, 1st yr, 3rd yr, and other associated rituals for deceased relatives and having a personage like the Dalai Lama preside over the ceremonies is quite an honor.

I pray as well that the deceased find their way to being hotokeisama went along a road of peace and tranquility!

I find the Dalai Lama a great comfort in the search for peace of mind .

I'm what you call "agnostic", but even I know the difference between a sermon and a prayer. The former is directed at those listening and the latter is directed at deities or at those who have departed.

The presence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama is truly a serene and beautiful sight.
