Candles are lit for a night-time performance at Africa Festa 2011, an event held over the weekend on the waterfront at Yokohama. Featuring a number of cultural organizations, businesses and support groups, the event proved a entertaining draw for local families and visitors while also breaking down a few pre-conceived ideas about Africa.

I would not call those candles -- they are luminarias. From Wiki: A luminaria or a farolito is a small paper lantern (commonly a candle set in some sand inside a paper bag) which is of significance among New World Hispanics at Christmas time.

They are very beautiful. I never associated paper lanterns with Africa, they were always an Asian thing in the back of my mind.

It was a fun event - lots of colour and music. We were only there during the day though.

Looks great - wish I could have seen it. Who gets to sit in the chair in the middle?
